The Major:
A minimum UF GPA of 2.80 and GPA of 2.75 on all critical tracking course work (see below) is required for continuation in this limited access major beyond Semester 4.An undergraduate psychology major consists of a minimum of 36 semester hours in psychology. At least 30 of the 36 hours must be 3000-level or higher courses. At least 18 of the 36 hours must be taken at the university. To count toward the 36-hour total, all course grades must be C or better.
Critical tracking courses for the psychology major are as follows: PSY 2012 General Psychology, one additional psychology course, one of the Foundation courses listed below, STA 2023, one of BSC 2007, 2008 or 2010, and either MAC 1147 or both MAC 1140 and MAC 1114.
Courses for the major must be distributed as follows:
- Introductory level: PSY 2012 or its equivalent. (A score of 3 or above in the AP psychology exam, for example.) A maximum of one additional 2000-level class can be included in the 36-hour total.
- Foundation level: Students choose a minimum of two courses from each group:
Group A: CBH 3003, EAB 3002 OR EAB 3764 (but not both), EXP 3104, EXP 3604, PSB 3004 OR PSB 3054 (but not both).
Group B: CLP 3144, DEP 3053, SOP 3004, PPE 3004.
- Laboratory courses: Take either the general laboratory PSY 3213L, or one of the following specialized laboratory courses: CBH 4023C, DEP 4704C, EAB 4022C, EAB 4714C, EAB 4724C, EXP 4174C, EXP 4934C, PPE 4324C, PSB 4104C, SOP 4214C. Students considering continuing in graduate school are strongly encouraged to take one of the specialized laboratory courses. Both the general and a specialized laboratory course may be taken.
- Choose enough additional courses from the 3000 (including those listed above under Group A and Group B), 4000 or 5000 levels in psychology to meet the 36-hour minimum.
- Statistics: Two courses in statistics are required: STA 2023 and STA 3024. Grades of C or better are required. STA 2023 is a prerequisite for all 4000-5000 level courses in psychology and should be taken before laboratory courses. STA 3024 should be taken before or concurrently with any specialized psychology laboratory.
- Mathematics: Achieve proficiency up through pre-calculus: Algebra and Trigonometry (MAC 1147, grade of C or better). The combination of MAC 1114 and MAC 1140 (each with a grade of C or better) may be substituted for MAC 1147.
- Biological Science: Completion of BSC 2007, 2008 or 2010 is required.
- Majors should take ENC 3254, Writing in a Discipline (Psychology). This course provides important preparation for writing research reports in the required laboratory courses and can also fulfill the second composition course required by the college. The course also enhances application to graduate and professional schools (e.g., writing an effective essay on the application form) and counts toward the CLAS elective requirement.
- Majors should examine the Psychology Major Guidebook from the department Web site, www.psych.ufl.edu - click on "undergraduate information." Individual sections of the guidebook can be selected or a complete guidebook is available here for downloading or printing. All majors are also encouraged to see an adviser in the Psychology advising office, Room 135 Psychology Building.
Honors: To graduate cum laude, a student must have a 3.5 overall junior-/senior-level average. A student who has completed a substantive and empirical research paper at the university may request consideration for magna cum laude (high honors) or summa cum laude (highest honors) recognition. Normally, this is accomplished by completing at least one semester of PSY 4970. The paper will be evaluated by a three-person committee consisting of the student’s research supervisor and two other members of the psychology department. The committee may recommend magna cum laude or summa cum laude recognition if the project exhibits outstanding scholarship and if the student has earned at least a 3.5 grade point overall junior-/senior-level average, and in all psychology courses.
General Education: Most undergraduate psychology courses qualify for general education credit. Courses with a PSB prefix and EXP 3104, 3106 and 4174C count as biological sciences (B); most other psychology courses count as social and behavioral science (S).
Courses: Most of the foundation courses and the general laboratory courses are offered each semester. Special topic and other advanced courses are offered less frequently. Fewer courses, especially laboratory courses, are offered in summer. Descriptions of current courses are available in the Psychology advising office, 135 PSY.
Individual Work: In addition to regularly scheduled courses, the department offers four individual-work courses on a pass-fail basis: PSY 3912, PSY 4905, PSY 4949 and PSY 4970. Up to nine of these hours will count toward the 36 hours of required psychology courses for the major. In each case, a faculty member or other approved professional serves as a supervisor. For these and other research opportunities available, students should contact individual supervisors. For the Community Work, PSY 4949 course, students should contact the Psychology undergraduate advising office, 135 Psychology Building. Applications for all of these courses are available in the Psychology Building, Rooms 114 or 135.
Psychology
To remain ‘on track’ for this major, a student must meet the following critical tracking criteria.
Semester 1:
- 2.4 UF GPA required
- Complete MAC 1147 or MAC 1140
Semester 2:
- 2.6 UF GPA required.
- Complete at least 1 additional critical tracking course. If MAC 1140 taken in Semester 1, MAC 1114 should also be taken
Semester 3:
- 2.7 UF GPA required
- Complete 2 additional critical tracking courses with a 2.6 GPA on all critical tracking courses
Semester 4:
- 2.8 UF GPA required
- Complete 1 additional tracking course with a 2.75 critical tracking courses
Semester 5:
- Maintain 2.8 UF GPA
- Complete 1 additional psychology course (one of the 3 must be from the Foundation courses listed above) with 2.75 GPA on all critical tracking courses
