The Major: Linguistics involves the study of language in many domains and from multiple perspectives. The core courses analyze speech sounds, words, and the structure of language(s). The discipline also covers old and new languages; speech in ordinary conversation, the workplace, and the classroom. Child acquisition of languages and adult acquisition of a second language are important topics. Linguists also study language in relation to gender, the brain, and computers, as well as the interrelationship of languages and dialects.

Linguists analyze and contribute to mass communication, they testify about language meaning and use in the courtroom, and they analyze natural language processing. Their expertise helps people in all walks of life to communicate more effectively; patients and doctors, spouses and partners, students and teachers. Finally, linguists teach non-native speakers to speak, read, write and comprehend English and other languages.

Students must earn a grade of C or higher within two attempts in a minimum of 33 semester hours, distributed as follows:

  • Program Core Courses (18 credits) Students must take all of the following with an average GPA of 2.0:
  • LIN 3010 Introduction to Linguistics
  • LIN 3201 The Sounds of Human Language
  • LIN 3460 Traditional Grammars
  • Three 4000-level Linguistics classes
  • Program Elective Courses (9 credits)
  • Students may take 6 credits from a list of linguistically oriented courses. Consult the undergraduate coordinator or program director for emphasis areas and electives.

The Minor: A student must complete, with a 2.0 average, 15 credits in linguistics. Refer to the approved list for possible courses. LIN 3010, 3201, and 3460 are required, and at least one 4000-level linguistics course.

TESL Minor: Teaching English as a Second Language is intended for undergraduates who might want to work in English language programs in the U.S. or abroad. All work must be completed at the university with grades of C or above. The 18 hours should be distributed as follows:

Core courses (12 credits). Four required courses are:

LIN 3010 Introduction to Linguistics

TSL 3370 Introduction to TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language)

LIN 3680 Modern English Structure

LIN 4721 Second Language Acquisition

Elective courses (6 credits). Choose two classes from the following:

LIN 3201 Sounds of Human Language

LIN 3460 Structure of Human Language

LIN 4600 Survey of Sociolinguistics

ENG 4060 History of the English Language

LIN 4656 Gender and Language

ANT 3620 Language and Culture

Linguistics

Academic progress of freshmen and sophomores is monitored each semester based on criteria established by the college faculty. These criteria are known as "Critical Tracking Criteria". To remain ‘on track’ for this major, a student must meet the following critical tracking criteria.

Semester 1:

  • 2.0 UF GPA required for semesters 1-5

Semester 2:

  • Maintain 2.0 UF GPA.

Semester 3:

  • Complete a course in a foreign language sequence or a linguistics course

Semester 4:

  • Complete an additional course in a foreign language or linguistics

Semester 5:

  • Complete LIN3010 with a 2.5 GPA on all critical tracking course work.
  • Complete the beginning sequence of a foreign language (if 4-3-3 option)
