Economics

The Major: Economics majors acquire the analytical and communication skills that are useful to careers in finance, insurance, government, management, marketing and medicine. The training is also ideal for students who want advanced training in business through an M.B.A. degree. Economics has become increasingly important in legal analysis; hence, economics is a popular major for pre-law students.

An economics major is offered in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Warrington College of Business Administration. Economics majors should see an economics adviser during the freshman year.

All CLAS students majoring in economics must complete a course in calculus, STA 2023, ECO 2013, ECO 2023, ECO 3101, ECO 3203 (or ECO 3704) and four economics electives or three economics electives and FIN 3403. ECP 3703, ECO 4905, ECO 4941, and ECO 4970 do not count toward these electives. Students must achieve grades of C or higher in each required pre-professional and economics course.

Course prerequisites are strictly enforced. A current/revised listing of course prerequisites is available each term in 100 Stuzin Hall.

Students planning to pursue graduate study in economics should consider a minor in mathematics or statistics or take the following mathematics and statistics courses in preparation for graduate school: MAC 2311-2-3, MAP 3302, either MAS 3114 or 4105 and STA 4321 and 4322. (Students taking advanced statistics might not be required to take STA 2023.)

Honors: CLAS students who have a 3.3 GPA in all economics work, a 3.5 overall junior-/ senior-level GPA and complete a 4-hour honors program are candidates for high (magna cum laude) or highest honors (summa cum laude). The honors program involves a research project and paper, and enrollment in ECO 4935 or ECO 4905. To graduate magna cum laude, students must fulfill the requirements for honors and must have the paper approved by the department’s undergraduate committee. Tog graduate summa cum laude, students must satisfy the requirements for high honors, earn a 3.5 GPA in all economics work and earn a 3.7 overall GPA in the major.

The Minor: A minor consists of 18 hours (5 courses) to include ECO 2013, 2023 and at least 12 hours (3 courses) with the prefix ECO, ECP or ECS at the 3000-level or higher. FIN 3403 or 3408 may be substituted for one of these courses. All upper-division work must be taken at UF. Students must earn a B or higher in ECO 2013 and ECO 2023 and a C or higher in the remaining courses. No independent studies courses, courses taken S-U or internship credits count toward the minor. Potential minors should note that space in upper-division economics courses is limited and majors have priority. Admission to the minor does not guarantee a seat in an upper-division course before graduation.

Economics

To remain ‘on track’ for this major, a student must meet the following critical tracking criteria.

• 2.0 UF GPA required for semesters 1-5

Semester 2:

• Complete 1 of 4 courses (ECO2013, ECO2023, MAC2233 or STA2023) with a 2.0 GPA on critical tracking course work.

• Complete 1 additional course of the 4 courses with a 2.5 GPA on critical tracking course work.

• Complete 2 additional courses of the 4 courses with a 2.75 GPA on all critical tracking course work

• Maintain course work with a 2.75 GPA on all critical tracking course work
