The Major: The standard major must complete at least the following program (this may include equivalent transfer course work):
Required CHM courses must be completed with minimum C grades within two attempts. Any language acceptable to the college may be taken with this minimum program. Languages may be taken on an S-U basis. The required courses in the standard chemistry track are generally offered every regular term. Because of budgetary and other restrictions, summer schedules cannot be predetermined. Summer offerings will usually be on a Term C (12 weeks) basis. A.C.S. Certified Program: To receive American Chemical Society certification and adequate preparation for the profession, a student must complete the standard chemistry major. In addition, credit must be earned for CHM 3610L and an additional six credits of advanced work in chemistry courses such as CHM 4207, CHM 4235, CHM 4272, CHM 4302L, CHM 4304, CHM 4453, CHM 4910, and CHS 5110L. If CHM 4910 (Senior Research) is used, a thesis must be written. The language requirement must be met in German, French or Russian. The Major with Biochemistry Option: Students with a special interest in biochemistry may satisfy requirements for a major with the following set of courses:
Honors: To graduate cum laude, a student must have a 3.5 overall junior-/senior- level average. The distinction of magna cum laude (high honors) will be awarded with a junior-/senior-level grade point average of 3.5 or higher, a 3.3 or higher average for all chemistry course work attempted—exclusive of CHM 4910 and CHM 4905—and completion of a minimum of six semester hours of Senior Research, CHM 4910. In addition, a thesis based upon the research project must be presented, together with a letter of recommendation from the faculty supervisor. The thesis must contain both discussion and experimental results. The research will normally be directed by a member of the chemistry faculty. With department approval, a problem that is chemical in nature may be conducted outside the chemistry department. Contact an undergraduate coordinator in chemistry to obtain approval for this option. The distinction of summa cum laude (highest honors) can be awarded to students whose thesis and overall program are of exceptional merit. The Minor: The requirements for a minor in chemistry are a general chemistry sequence; CHM 3120-3120L; either CHM 2210-2211-2211L or CHM 3217-3218-2211L; and three additional credits selected from CHM 3400, 3610, any 4000-level CHM course or CHS 5110L, with a grade of C or better. At least nine chemistry credits must be completed at UF. General Education: Successful completion of any chemistry course counts toward the physical science general education requirement. Non-science students who wish to learn something about chemistry may take CHM 1083 or the CHM 1020-1021 sequence. Majors in the physical, biological or engineering sciences should take a 2000-level sequence. Introduction to General Chemistry: CHM 1025 is offered for students who wish to strengthen their understanding of basic concepts of atomic structure and stoichiometry before beginning the general chemistry sequence (CHM 2045-2045L-2046-2046L). CHM 1025 is a two-credit, S-U-graded course. A Chemistry Readiness Assessment is offered on ISIS, and the score achieved allows students and advisers to evaluate whether CHM 1025 or CHM 2045 is the more appropriate first course in chemistry for a student. General Chemistry: The following general chemistry offerings are available: CHM 1020-21 is a terminal sequence that surveys a broad range of topics in chemistry and its importance to modern society. This sequence meets pre-professional requirements in the College of Natural Resources and Environment, the College of Nursing, and some majors in agriculture. CHM 1083 is a terminal general education course that explores chemistry in terms of consumer products. This course meets pre-professional requirements in certain areas of agriculture. CHM 2045-2045L-2046-2046L is the standard general chemistry sequence. It meets the pre-professional requirement for a broad range of science and engineering majors. Students are presumed to have a good background in high school chemistry and mathematics (through Algebra II or MAC 1147) and are expected to take the Chemistry Readiness Assessment offered on ISIS before registration for CHM 2045. CHM 2047 and CHM 2047L is a one-semester program for entering students with strong backgrounds in chemistry, normally reflected by high AP or IB chemistry test scores. This program allows students to move more quickly into advanced work. CHM 2051 (General Chemistry Honors) is offered as an alternative to CHM 2046 for students who have done particularly well in CHM 2045. For placement into the appropriate first course in chemistry, please see the information in the academic advising section of the catalog or consult with a chemistry adviser in Leigh 214. All students should complete their general chemistry studies without interruption. Attendance Requirement: Anyone missing the first two sessions of a laboratory course, and having thus missed required safety instruction, will not be allowed to start late, regardless of reason.
