Anthropology

The Major: An undergraduate major must have a minimum of 34 semester hours in anthropology, including ANT 2000, ANT 2410, ANT 3141, ANT 3620 and ANT 3514. Majors are encouraged to take ANT 2000 in their first year of course work. Of the remaining 21 hours, 15 must be 3000 level and above. In addition, all anthropology majors are required to take STA 2023, Introduction to Statistics. All course work counted toward the major must have a grade of C or better.

All undergraduates should contact the department coordinator soon after enrolling at the university. Transfer credits in anthropology must be approved in writing by the undergraduate coordinator to count toward the degree program.

Interdisciplinary Certificate: The department encourages students to choose a minor or an interdisciplinary certificate option in Latin American studies, African studies, Asian studies, women’s studies, linguistics, Jewish studies or environmental studies and a major in anthropology. Relevant courses in anthropology may be used to fulfill some requirements. Students can combine anthropology courses with courses in other fields for an interdisciplinary major.

Honors: To graduate cum laude, a student must have at least a 3.5 junior-/senior-level (upper-division) GPA. To graduate magna cum laude (high honors) or summa cum laude (highest honors) requires a 3.5 GPA in anthropology courses and an advanced seminar or beginning graduate-level courses in a topical area of the student’s choice, with the permission of the professor. In a subsequent semester students must register for three hours of ANT 4914 (department honors). Under the direction of an honors adviser, students will write an honors essay on a topic suggested by the previous advanced course. Upon recommendation of the adviser, the student will receive high (magna cum laude) or highest honors (summa cum laude).

The Minor: Students may minor in anthropology by completing 15 hours with a grade of C or better (no S grades are accepted). A minimum of nine hours must be taken at the university, and at least nine hours must be at the 3000 level or above. Courses with a number ending in "905" do not apply to the minor. Two courses are required: General Anthropology, ANT 2000 and one of the following: ANT 2410, ANT 3141, ANT 3620 or ANT 3514.

Overseas Study: Students are encouraged to participate in overseas studies in academic classes and in ethnographic and archeological field schools. The Yucatan, Mexico program is sponsored by the department. Other programs are available throughout the world. Anthropology major credit is given for appropriate courses.

General Education: The majority of courses in anthropology contribute to international studies and diversity (I) and social sciences (S). Some courses are also humanities (H) and biological sciences (B) requirements.

Courses: There are no prerequisites for 2000 level courses. Descriptions of new courses are posted outside 1112 Turlington. Students in the honors program may take the honors sections of ANT 2301 Human Sexuality and Culture, ANT 2410 Cultural Anthropology, ANT 3514 Biological Anthropology, and ANT 3620 Language and Culture. Honors students are also eligible at the sophomore level and above to take, with permission of the instructor, any graduate-level course. Honors students are encouraged to continue in the department’s honors program.

Students are encouraged to take anthropology courses that include Method, Theory, and Topical courses, as well as Area Courses in either the Ethnographic or Archaeological Cultures of different regions.

Ethnographic and Archaeological Cultures Courses: 3153, 3163, 3164, 3332, 3365, 3367, 4326, 4336, 4337, 4352, 4354.

Students concentrating in either cultural anthropology or archaeology are also encouraged to complete either an ethnographic study abroad program or an archaeological field school. It is recommended that these be completed before senior year.

Anthropology

To remain ‘on track’ for this major, a student must meet the following critical tracking criteria.

• 2.0 UF GPA required for semesters 1-5

• Complete 1 Anthropology course

• Complete 1 additional Anthropology course

• 2.5 GPA on all critical tracking course work

• 2.5 GPA on all critical tracking course work
