Pre-Pharmacy Course Requirements for the Doctor of Pharmacy

Course requirements for the Doctor of Pharmacy include the pre-professional curriculum and four years of professional preparation. Courses and clerkships in the professional curricula are revised periodically to meet pharmacy education standards. Current information on the curriculum can be obtained from the Office for Student Affairs in the College of Pharmacy.

All Doctor of Pharmacy students complete required courses and elective requirements (146 total credits for the professional curriculum and 69-72 credits in the pre-professional program).

Pre-Pharmacy

To remain 'on track' for this major you must meet the following critical tracking criteria. The critical tracking courses appear in bold.

Semester 1:

• Complete CHM1025 or (CHM2045 and CHM2045L)

Semester 2:

• Complete 3 additional courses of the 11 critical courses - excluding labs ((CHM2045, CHM2045L, CHM2046, CHM2046L, MAC2233, BSC2010, BSC2010L, BSC2011, BSC2011L, CHM2210, CHM2211, CHM2211L, PHY2004, PHY2004L, PHY2005, PHY2005L, PET2320C and PET2350C)))
• 3.0 GPA on all math and science courses for semesters 2-5

Semester 3:

• Complete 4 additional courses of the 11 critical courses - excluding labs
• 2 of the critical courses must be CHM2210 and (PET2320C or ZOO3713C)

Semester 4:

• Complete all 11 critical courses - including associated labs
• Satisfactory score on the PCAT test
• Complete Notice of Application, Supplemental Application Form to Select a Campus Site, Personal Profile and Essays online by March 1.
• Download two Letters of Recommendation Forms and a Signature Page and submit to the Office for Student Affairs by March 1.
• Approval by college admission committee

Please note that the semester one label may not be the first semester at the university. Semester one refers to the first semester of pre-professional science and mathematics courses. Students who already have satisfied the criteria for a particular semester will be assigned an appropriate semester to begin the tracking program. Critical tracking courses are bolded in the semester plans and should be completed in the semester indicated. Pre-professional courses are preceeded by an asterick (*).

Doctor of Pharmacy/BS in Nutritional Science Option

Students who complete nutritional science courses through the junior year in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences may be eligible to receive a BS in Nutritional Sciences upon completion of the Pharmaceutical science courses in the first professional year of the Doctor of Pharmacy program.

Professional Curriculum for the Doctor of Pharmacy

Course requirements for the Doctor of Pharmacy include the general education requirements, pharmacy prerequisites and four years of professional preparation. Courses and clerkships in the professional curriculum are periodically revised to meet pharmacy education standards.

Changes in course descriptions, credits and sequence may require modification due to availability of resources and facilities. Any change in the curriculum will be noted in College of Pharmacy brochures. Current information on the curriculum can be obtained from the college's Office for Student Affairs.

Graduate Programs

Doctor of Pharmacy/Master of Business Administration

This program allows students interested in management positions in pharmaceutical care to obtain the two degrees concurrently. The program is five years of professional studies after completion of two years of pre-pharmacy courses. Candidates must meet admission requirements for the MBA program and the College of Pharmacy. This concurrent program is not open to students who already have earned one of the degrees. Students must satisfy curriculum requirements for both degrees.

Doctor of Pharmacy / Doctor of Philosophy in the Pharmaceutical Sciences

This program allows students interested in accelerated graduate studies in pharmacy to obtain the two degrees consecutively. The program is four years of professional studies and three to four years of graduate studies after completion of two years of pre-pharmacy courses. Candidates must meet admission requirements of the Graduate School and the College of Pharmacy. This program is not open to students who already have earned one of the degrees. Students must satisfy curriculum requirements for both degrees.

Doctor of Pharmacy/Master of Physician Assistant Studies

This program allows students interested in primary care and physical assessment as aspects of pharmaceutical care to obtain the two degrees concurrently. The program is five years of professional studies after completion of two years of pre-pharmacy courses. Candidates must meet admission requirements for the PA program and the College of Pharmacy. This concurrent program is not open to students who already have earned one of the degrees. Students must satisfy curriculum requirements for both degrees.

Doctor of Pharmacy/Master of Public Health

This program allows students interested in public health as an aspect of pharmaceutical care to obtain the two degrees concurrently. The program is five years of professional studies after completion of two years of pre-pharmacy courses. Candidates must meet admission requirements for the MPH program and the College of Pharmacy. This concurrent program is not open to students who already have earned one of the degrees. Students must satisfy curriculum requirements for both degrees.
