Art

The School of Art and Art History (SAAH) offers the Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in art with specializations in ceramics, drawing, electronic inter-media, painting, printmaking and sculpture. It also offers the B.F.A. in graphic design and creative photography. In addition, the school offers a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in art history, digital arts and sciences, and in general visual arts studies, and a Bachelor of Arts in Art Education (B.A.A.E.). SAAH offers one minor, in art history. There are no studio minors. Admission is highly selective but may be gained in the freshman, sophomore or junior years.

The B.F.A., B.A.A.E. and the B.A. in Digital Arts and Science curricula are intended for students who plan to enter professional careers in fine arts or design, to teach art in public schools, universities or colleges, or to enter graduate study.

Students who seek a liberal arts education with emphasis upon the visual arts should choose the B.A. in Visual Art Studies curriculum.

Admission Requirements for Freshmen and Sophomore Students currently at UF but not majoring in Art

Freshmen and sophomore students who would like to change their major to an art studio major must submit a conditional portfolio. This portfolio should consist of no more than ten pieces of artwork. An art faculty committee will review conditional portfolios and either accept or deny conditional admittance into an art studio major. Upon conditional acceptance, a student will start the lower division art studio courses. A professional portfolio must be submitted in order to gain admittance into the 3000 level studio courses.

Those students who are interested in changing their major to art history must complete ARH2050 and ARH2051 with a grade no lower than a B prior to gaining admission into art history.

Students may not change their major to an art major if they are currently on probation in their college.

Students may not change their major to an art major after having completed 75 credits (this includes current enrollment).

Preparation for Degrees in Art - Graphic Design, Art Education, History of Art and Studio Areas

Admission to the B.F.A., B.A.A.E., or B.A. degree programs is not automatic. At the end of the sophomore year or 60 hours, all students must meet minimum GPA requirements and submit a portfolio based upon the previous two years' art work for admission to the 3000-level course sequence in their concentration. Portfolio deadline is October 15 for spring admission and March 15 for fall admission. The graphic design and the digital arts and science portfolio deadlines are March 15 only. All students are encouraged to work with faculty members in order to submit the best portfolio possible. Admission is highly selective and competitive.

Pre-professional Requirements

All students entering into any degree program, with the exception of Art History, must take ART 1802C and 1803C (regardless of AP, IP or dual enrollment courses), a drawing studio, and ARH 2050 and 2051. Students may take two 2000-level studio courses before ART 1802C and ART 1803C. A portfolio review will be required of students prior to admission into junior level studio courses.

Courses used to meet pre-professional and general education requirements may not be taken by correspondence or pass/fail (known as "S-U" at the University of Florida). Students who wish to use a course from another institution to fulfill pre-professional and/or general education requirements should first consult with the art adviser.

Upper-division Transfer Admission Requirements

The Office of Admissions determines the transferability of credit earned at other institutions. Students may transfer no more than 60 hours from a community college as part of the hours required for a UF degree; this limit does not apply to coursework taken at a four-year institution. Students who have achieved advanced upper division status, 90 credits or more, at a four-year institution may not be admitted.

Upper-division transfer students (defined as applicants with at least 60 credit hours) are admitted to the college for the fall, spring or summer A/C term, provided they fulfill the following requirements:

Transfer students who have been accepted into UF to a major other than one in SAAH must complete all of the prerequisite courses at another institution and submit a professional portfolio for admission into an upper division art major.

Non-major Students

SAAH programs are limited access. Students enrolled in other majors, may take an art studio course if there is space available. The process to get into an art studio course as a non-art major is: 1) Obtain an override form from the adviser's office. 2) During the first week of classes in the semester that a student wants to take an art studio class, go to the class and ask the professor if he/she will admit you into the course. If approval is granted, have the professor fill out the appropriate override form. 3) Bring the override form back to the adviser's office. 4) If all of the conditions set by the instructor are met, the adviser will register the non-art student for the course.

Art History Minor

Art History is the only minor offered in the School of Art and Art History and is available to all UF students. There are no art studio minors. To earn a minor in art history, a student must first complete ARH2050 and ARH2051, with a grade of C or better. A student must meet with the art adviser to apply for the art history minor. Upon approval, the student must complete three upper division courses in art history. Independent studies or internships do not fulfill credits for the minor.

Satisfactory Progress

Students in the School of Art and Art History are expected to earn a grade of C or better in all courses taken in the school. No more than one D is allowed in SAAH courses. Students must receive grades of C or better in all pre-professional and specialization courses. No more than one D is allowed in each general education category. Most programs require an overall GPA of 3.0.
