2009-10 Undergraduate Catalog
Established: 1937
Accredited: Society of American Foresters, Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology
Programs: Forest Resources and Conservation (FRC), Geomatics (GEM), and Natural Resource Conservation (RCN)
Degrees: Bachelor of Science in Forest Resources and Conservation, Bachelor of Science in Geomatics
Scholarships: The school offers scholarships and awards totaling $50,000 per year. In addition, SFRC students compete for other scholarships available through the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. For more information, email the Student Services Office at maekiggins@ufl.edu.
Facilities for Instruction/Research: Austin Cary Memorial Forest (2,000 acre mixed-use forest, 15 miles northeast of campus).
Internships and Career Guidance: Depending on major and focus, FRC and NRC students find careers with a variety of government agencies, private consulting firms and non-profit conservation groups engaged in the management of natural resources for ecological, economic and social benefits/values. Most students gain some practical work experience while completing their degrees. This may be in the form of part-time work, summer internships or continuing co-ops and are almost always paid positions. Job placement at graduation is excellent with approximately 90% of graduates finding full-time, permanent employment within the field.
Geomatics (GEM) students complete two required internships during their program. Assistance is provided to help students identify appropriate internship experiences with surveying and engineering firms and with various agencies. Internship opportunities are available throughout the state and all provide valuable hands-on experiences. Most GEM graduates have multiple job offers with very competitive salaries.
Undergraduate Degrees: In addition to general education in the arts, history and humanities, students complete specific bio-physical science, mathematical science, social science and communications courses in preparation for the curriculum in the major.
