Classical Studies

Description of the Major

The Bachelor of Arts in classical studies, with specializations in either classical civilization, ancient language or teacher certification, develops proficiency in either Latin and/or ancient Greek. Through the study of language and literature, you gain knowledge of literary and historical genres, systems of thought and language structure and use. Emphasis is on your ability to translate Latin and/or ancient Greek and to analyze patterns in language. You will be ability to communicate independent, critical perspectives and to apply these skills to your area of specialization.

Before Graduating You Must

Successfully complete a department exam in Latin or ancient Greek, graded according to department rubric.
Satisfy the Florida statutory requirements for CLAST.
Complete requirements for the baccalaureate degree, as determined by faculty.

Skills You Will Acquire in the Major (SLOs)

Competency in either Latin or ancient Greek (i.e., knowledge of vocabulary, morphology and syntax).
Knowledge of the socio-historical context of Latin or ancient Greek literature.
Ability to analyze and interpret a Latin or ancient Greek text according to its cultural, literary and/or linguistic content.
Recognition of aural prompts and effective communication in Latin or ancient Greek.
