Special Program Information –

The Accelerated Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing

The College of Nursing offers an accelerated course of study for students with a baccalaureate degree in another field to pursue a baccalaureate degree in nursing.

Students meet Graduate School admission criteria upon application to the baccalaureate component to facilitate direct progression from the baccalaureate to the master’s degree program.

Courses and course sequencing in this accelerated baccalaureate option parallel the existing baccalaureate curriculum. However, the student with additional academic preparation is expected to master and apply concepts to various populations without content repetition.

The accelerated baccalaureate curriculum begins each summer and is completed in three and one-half semesters of fulltime study.

Program of Study for Registered Nurses

The College of Nursing offers a course of study for registered nurses who desire a baccalaureate degree. RN to BSN students meet college graduation requirements through credit by examination, classroom attendance and clinical experiences. A class schedule that considers the needs of working RNs is available.

Course work focuses on development of professional nursing practice and includes content that will broaden and strengthen the registered nurse student’s repertoire of knowledge and skills. Content includes pathophysiology, pharmacology, health assessment, professional socialization, finance, health care delivery, research and family/community nursing. Clinical experiences are with individuals, families and groups in community settings.

The practicum is the culminating clinical experience and provides an opportunity for integration and synthesis of professional role behaviors and evidence-based practice. An elective permits students to pursue individual interests and to avail themselves of knowledge from other disciplines.

A current Florida registered nurse license is required in addition to the criteria for enrollment in the college’s undergraduate nursing courses.
