College of Pharmacy Programs of Study

Preprofessional Course Requirements for the Doctor of Pharmacy

Read the sections describing General Education requirements. Preprofessional students are expected to fulfill these requirements.

Course requirements for the Doctor of Pharmacy include the preprofessional curriculum and four years of professional preparation. Courses and clerkships in the professional curricula are revised periodically to meet pharmacy education standards. Current information on the curriculum can be obtained from the Office for Student Affairs in the College of Pharmacy.

All Doctor of Pharmacy students complete required courses and elective requirements (146 total credits for the professional curriculum and 69-72 credits in the preprofessional program).

Preprofessional

To remain ‘on track’ for this major , a student must meet the following critical-tracking criteria. The critical-tracking courses appear in bold.

Semester 1:

  • Complete CHM 1025 or (CHM 2045 and CHM 2045L)

Semester 2:

  • Complete 3 additional courses of the 11 critical courses – including labs – CHM 2045, CHM 2045L, CHM 2046, CHM 2046L, MAC 2233, BSC 2010, BSC 2010L, BSC 2011, BSC 2011L, CHM 2210, CHM 2211, CHM 2211L, PHY 2004, PHY 2004L, PHY 2005, PHY 2005L, PET 2320C and PET 2350C
  • 3.0 GPA on all math and science courses for semesters 2-5

Semester 3:

  • Complete 4 additional courses of the 11 critical courses – including labs (2 of the 7 courses must be CHM 2210 and PET 2320C or ZOO 3713C)

Semester 4:

  • Complete all 11 critical courses – including associated labs
  • Satisfactory score on the PCAT test
  • Complete Campus Site Selection Form, Letters of Recommendation and PharmCAS application by March 1
  • Approval by college admission committee

Please note that the semester one label may not be the first semester at the university. Semester one refers to the first semester of preprofessional science and mathematics courses. Students who already have satisfied the criteria for a particular semester will be assigned an appropriate semester to begin the tracking program. Critical-tracking courses are bolded in the semester plans and should be completed in the semester indicated. Preprofessional courses are preceded by an asterisk (*).

Doctor of Pharmacy/Bachelor of Science in Nutritional Science Option

Students who complete nutritional science courses through the junior year in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences may be eligible to receive a B.S. in Nutritional Sciences upon completion of the pharmaceutical science courses in the first professional year of the Doctor of Pharmacy program.

Professional Curriculum for the Doctor of Pharmacy

Details about the course work required for the Doctor of Pharmacy as well as the policies, procedures and admissions requirements are explained in College of Pharmacy literature online. Please visit the College of Pharmacy Web site at www.cop.ufl.edu.

Course requirements for the Doctor of Pharmacy include the General Education requirements, pharmacy prerequisites and four years of professional preparation. Courses and clerkships in the professional curriculum are periodically revised to meet pharmacy education standards.

Changes in course descriptions, credits and sequence may require modification due to availability of resources and facilities. Any change in the curriculum will be noted in College of Pharmacy brochures. Current information on the curriculum can be obtained from the college’s Office for Student Affairs.

Graduate Programs

Doctor of Pharmacy/Master of Business Administration

This program allows students interested in management positions in pharmaceutical care to obtain the two degrees concurrently. The program is five years of professional studies after completion of two years of preprofessional courses. Candidates must meet admission requirements for the M.B.A. program and the College of Pharmacy. This concurrent program is not open to students who already have earned one of the degrees. Students must satisfy curriculum requirements for both degrees.

Doctor of Pharmacy/Master of Physician Assistant Studies

This program allows students interested in primary care and physical assessment as aspects of pharmaceutical care to obtain the two degrees concurrently. The program is five years of professional studies after completion of two years of pre-pharmacy courses. Candidates must meet admission requirements for the PA program and the College of Pharmacy. This concurrent program is not open to students who already have earned one of the degrees. Students must satisfy curriculum requirements for both degrees.

Doctor of Pharmacy/Master of Public Health

This program allows students interested in public health as an aspect of pharmaceutical care to obtain the two degrees concurrently. The program is five years of professional studies after completion of two years of pre-pharmacy courses. Candidates must meet admission requirements for the M.P.H. program and the College of Pharmacy. This concurrent program is not open to students who already have earned one of the degrees. Students must satisfy curriculum requirements for both degrees.

Doctor of Pharmacy / Doctor of Philosophy in the Pharmaceutical Sciences

This program allows students interested in accelerated graduate studies in pharmacy to obtain the two degrees consecutively. The program is four years of professional studies and three to four years of graduate studies after completion of two years of preprofessional courses. Candidates must meet admission requirements of the Graduate School and the College of Pharmacy. This program is not open to students who already have earned one of the degrees. Students must satisfy curriculum requirements for both degrees.

Doctor of Pharmacy/Juris Doctorate

This program allows students interested in law as an aspect of their career path to obtain two degrees in a shorter time frame. The program is six years of professional studies after completion of two years of preprofessional course work. Candidates must meet admission requirements for the Juris Doctorate through the Levin College of Law and the Doctor of Pharmacy degree through the College of Pharmacy. This program is not open to students who already have earned one of the degrees. Students must satisfy curriculum requirements for both degrees.
