Completion of the health science education program leads to the Bachelor of Science in Health Science Education. Opportunities are available for specialization in one or more areas in health science education. Students are prepared for a variety of health career opportunities such as health education specialists with government, municipal, industrial, commercial, pharmaceutical, voluntary health and health care delivery organizations.

Completion of the courses required for teaching certification also prepares students to serve as teachers of health and related life sciences in schools and colleges and as coordinators of school health programs. Many different bases of employment for health educators require completion of the teaching credential.

Students must complete the general education requirement, the preprofessional core and the professional health science education core.

Preprofessional Requirements for Freshmen and Sophomores

All students are encouraged to complete the general education and health science education preprofessional requirements before reaching 60 credit hours to ensure all course prerequisites are met. The preprofessional requirements include:

  • 3 credits in statistics, any STA prefix
  • 3 credits in general psychology, PSY 2013
  • 3 credits in personal/family health, HSC 2100
  • 3 credits in general sociology, SYG 2000, or social problems, SYG 2010

Specialization Areas

Each student must complete at least one of the specialization areas described in the following paragraphs. Please review the suggested course sequences outlined in this catalog. Checklists for each area are available from the departmental office in Florida Gym, room 6.

(top)

Community Health (CH) is designed for students primarily interested in illness and disease prevention among special target groups within a particular community. Community Health Educators generally find employment in government health programs such as public health units or voluntary health agencies such as the American Cancer Society, the March of Dimes, or Planned Parenthood organizations. Course work in this area provides practical instruction in addressing various public health needs and problems through the use of a variety of educational methods. This specialization also provides good background for students planning to enter a graduate program in health education or public health

Health Promotion (HP) provides training for students interested in working as a health educator for employee assistance programs and corporate or hospital-based wellness centers. Many companies utilizing large employee populations have noticed a significant decrease in absenteeism and an increase in work productivity for those employees actively participating in an exercise program. In addition insurance rates tend to be lower for those employees thus providing an incentive for employers to offer such programs. Students choosing this specialization area are encouraged to seek elective course work within the department of Exercise & Sport Sciences.

Health Studies (HS) is designed for students pursuing admission to a professional school or graduate program. This specialization allows significant flexibility in completing necessary required course work for the health science education degree program as well as prerequisite course work for professional programs such as chiropracty, dentistry, medicine, nursing, optometry, osteopathy or physical therapy. Students are also prepared to enter graduate programs in public health, health administration, epidemiology and disease prevention.

More information related to preprofessional requirements in the professional school may be obtained from the Office of Health and Legal Professions Advising in the Academic Advising Center as well as the Career Resource Center. Students should also contact a representative from the specific program for more information.

School Health (SH) is a five year combined degree program which culminates in the awarding of both the degree of Bachelor of Science in Health Science Education and the Master of Health Science Education for students seeking Florida state certification in School Health Education. This program offers a cost and time-savings of 12 credit hours and offers excellent preparation for students wishing to pursue instructional and administrative positions in the K-12 school system.

Combined Bachelor's/Master's Program For Certification in Health Education

Upon admission to the university, students must declare their intent to pursue the combined program for the school health education track. After successful completion of the first 60 credit hours of lower-division course work, students are allowed to continue on the school health track into their junior year. Requirements for continuation on the school health track include completion of the first 60 hours with an overall 2.5 GPA, passing scores on all portions of the CLAST exam, and completion of the following core preprofessional courses within the College of Education:

  • EDF 1005 Introduction to Education
  • EDG 2701 Teaching Diverse Populations
  • EME 2040 Intro. to Ed. Technology

Students who complete the degree requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Health Science Education are not recommended for teacher certification until completion of the 5th year of study. It is important to note that admission requirements for graduate school must be met in order to insure timely progression towards the Master's program in Health Education. Students should prepare to take the GRE upon entering their senior year of undergraduate study and have attained a minimum upper division GPA of 3.0 in order to be competitive for graduate admission.

The following sequence of courses is recommended for completion of both the Bachelors and the Masters degree for certification in school health education.
