A Quick Reference Guide to the Course Description Section of the Catalog

Sample Course Description Entry

  • Each course is identified by a three-letter prefix: MAC in the example above. If you know the course prefix, you can look in the Index to Course Prefixes (3-4) to find which department or departments offer courses using that prefix. Courses using the MAC prefix, for example, are taught in the Department of Mathematics.
  • The FIRST DIGIT of the course number identifies the level of the course (here 2000 or freshmen/sophomore level).
  • To locate departments or content areas, please use the Index of Course Descriptions on the opposite page.
  • General Education Categories are as follows:
    Composition (C)
    Mathematical Sciences (M)
    Humanities (H)
    Social and Behavioral Sciences (S)
Physical (P) and Biological (B) Sciences
    International and Diversity Focus (I)
  • GR-E indicates the course satisfies the writing portion of the Writing and Math Requirement.
  • GR-M indicates the course satisfies the math portion of the Writing and Math Requirement.
  • For information on Florida’s Statewide Course Numbering System go to page 3-8.
  • A Schedule of Courses is printed each term listing all courses offered that term.
  • Course listings each term are also available online at www.registrar.ufl.edu.
