Overview of organization, delivery and financing of health services in the U.S. Topics include health professionals, health care facilities, financing of health services, managed care and current health policy issues.

HSC 3057 Research Methods and Issues in Health Science.

Credits: 4; Prereq: STA 2023 or 2122; majors/minors only or permission of instructor.

Emphasis on four aspects of research: understanding research principles, evaluating journal articles, applying research findings to clinical settings and designing programmatic evaluation projects.

HSC 3502 Survey of Diseases and Disability.

Credits: 4.

Overview of medical and psychosocial aspects of chronic diseases and disability.

HSC 3661 Therapeutic Communication Skills with Patients, Families and the Health Care Team.

Credits: 2; Prereq: HSC 3502. Majors only.

Through lecture, discussion, and role play in large and small groups, students learn appropriate verbal and nonverbal behavior to be used with patients, families and the health care team.

HSC 3662 Alternative Health Care Delivery Models.

Credits: 3; Prereq: HSC 3502 and HSA 3111; majors/minors only or permission of instructor.

The primary objective of the course is to offer instruction and practice in health care communication skills and to provide an overview of key issues in healthcare communications and telehealth.

HSC 3801 Clinical Observation/Health Care Volunteer Work

Credits: 1 to 4.

This course is designed to provide the student with an opportunity to learn about a specific health care field or gain knowledge about specific patient or client populations through direct observation and/or hands on assistance.

HSC 4558 Disability Management.

Credits: 3; Prereq: HSC 3502; majors/minors only.

Issues in disability management, including occupational health, impact of disability, treatment strategies, general rehabilitation process, ADA, worker’s compensation and assistive technology.

HSC 4608L Critical Thinking in Health Care.

Credits: 4; Prereq: HSC 3502, HSA 3111 HSC 4558. Majors only.

Assists students in the development of critical thinking skills in solving problems, in the health care environment.

HSC 4653L Ethical and Legal Issues in the Health Professions.

Credits: 3; Prereq: HSC 3502, 4558, and HSC 4608L. Majors only.

Overview of ethical and legal issues in the health professions, including contemporary ethical issues in disease management.

HSC 4930 Leadership Skills and Styles.

Credits: 3.

Introduction to leadership philosophy, assessment of personal leadership style, developing team work skills with others with different leadership styles.

OTH 3416 Pathophysiology.

Credits: 3.

Basic understanding of pathophysiology as a change from normal physiological functioning of the various systems of the human body.
