Health Science Education – School Health

School health education is a teaching education program that meets certification requirements of the state of Florida for specializations in grades K – 12. Completion of the school health education track will prepare students to serve as teachers of health and related life sciences in schools and as coordinators of school health programs. It also meets the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) certification requirements. After successful completion of the first 62 credit hours of lower-division course work, students are allowed to continue on the school health track into their junior year. Requirements for continuation on the school health track include completion of the first 62 hours with an overall 2.5 GPA, passing scores on all portions of the General Knowledge Test and completion of the following core preprofessional courses within the College of Education:
- EDF 1005 Introduction to Education
- EME 2040 Intro. to Ed. Technology
- EDG 2701 Teaching Diverse Populations
To remain ‘on track’ for this major, a student must meet the following critical tracking criteria. The critical tracking courses appear in bold. All course work must be completed before the internship.
Semester 1:
- 2.5 UF GPA required for semesters 1-5
- Complete 2 of the 11 critical tracking courses with a 2.0 GPA on tracking courses (PSY2012, (SYG2000 or SYG2010), (SPC2600 or AEE3030C), HSC2100, PET2320C, PET2350C, HUN2201, STA2023, EDF1005, EME2040, and EDG2701)
Semester 2:
- Complete 2 additional courses of the 11 tracking courses with a 2.0 GPA on tracking courses
Semester 3:
- Complete 3 additional courses of the 11 tracking courses with a 2.0 GPA on tracking courses
Semester 4:
- Complete remaining 4 critical tracking courses with a 2.0 GPA on tracking courses
- Completion of the General Knowledge Test (GK)
