The School of Music offers undergraduate programs leading to the Bachelor of Music (B.Mus.), Bachelor of Music in music education (B.Muse.), and Bachelor of Arts (BA).

Areas of specialization for the B.M. include:

• Composition
• Music in combination with an outside field
• Performance Keyboard (piano, organ, harpsichord) Strings, Voice, Winds, Percussion, Recorder/Historical Instruments
• Theory

The Bachelor of Music in music education provides an instrumental, choral or choral/keyboard emphasis. In addition to the above degrees, a curriculum is offered leading to the Bachelor of Arts with emphasis in ethnomusicology, music history, performance or theory/composition.

As a vital component of one of the leading AAU research universities in the nation, the School of Music fully encourages scholarly research, creative activity, and interdisciplinary studies across all degree programs. Undergraduate and graduate offerings are intended to meet the needs of a diverse student population and prepare students for professional careers in music. The faculty includes renowned performers and pedagogues who are committed to the development of musicians and to the musical enrichment of the community. Graduate studies in the School of Music are expanding to include and support a broad range of music degrees and programs. This exemplifies the school’s vision, its continued investment in its students, and the University of Florida’s growing presence as a distinguished institution.

Admission to any curricula in the School of Music includes an audition and acceptance in a performance area. A minimum grade point average of 2.0 is required, except in music education where 2.5 is required. Prospective majors should contact the school’s director of admissions as early as possible.

For admission to the professional level of study, all music majors must complete:

• Musicianship Assessment Jury, taken at the end of the theory sequence (usually 60 hrs.).
• Secondary Piano Levels I to IV with grades of C or better or successful completion of the secondary piano proficiency exam.
• Musical Styles (MUL 2110) (not required for music education majors) with a grade of C or better.
• The Pre-professional Performance Jury (taken the last semester of MV_2_).
• Ensemble semesters as required by the student’s degree track.
• Four semesters of Recital Attendance (MUS 1010) with grades of S.

A Comprehensive Musicianship Jury will take place at the end of each semester of theory. The Final Comprehensive Musicianship Exam will be taken at this jury after four semester of theory. All students must pass the Final Comprehensive Musicianship Exam whether theory courses are completed at UF or are transferred from another institution. Transfer students must successfully complete at UF, with a grade of C or better, any remedial course work assigned by the School of Music before taking the Final Comprehensive Musician Exam.

Students who exhibit excellent potential as a music major but who are not adequately prepared to enter the theory sequence as required by the degree track, may be granted provisional status. Students who are provisional status are placed in MUT1001, Rudiments of Theory. At the successful conclusion of MUT1001, provisional students are eligible for classification as a pre-professional music major.

Transfer students, with or without an AA degree, who have satisfactorily completed the required four semesters of music theory sequence and four semesters of lower-division performance study, four semesters of piano skills, and MUL 2110 Musical Styles, must successfully take a Comprehensive Musicianship Exam upon admittance to the School of Music to be considered as a junior. Those students who have not met the above requirements must take a Comprehensive Musicianship Exam for placement within the theory program and must then successfully pass a Comprehensive Musicianship Exam upon completion of the theory course work assigned for remediation.

Music majors must earn a minimum grade of C in each required music course, both to fulfill degree requirements and to advance to the next level. All music students must stand for a performance examination each term they are enrolled in performance study. No course may be repeated more than once, except for ensembles, performance courses and project courses. Consult School’s Music Student Information Handbook for specific requirements.

• Students may fulfill three hours of the mathematics requirements by taking PHI 2100 (Logic) or computer sciences courses.
• All music majors will take 12 hours in humanities, with MUL 2110 (Musical Styles) (not required for Music Education majors), MUH 3211 (History of Music 1), MUH 3212 (History of Music 2), and one of the following courses in world music: MUH 2501, MUH 2530 or MUH 3541.
• Students in the Bachelor of Music in music education program fulfill 12 hours of social/behavioral sciences requirements by the courses EDF 3210 (Educational Psychology) and EDG 2701 (Diverse Populations), PSY 2012 (General Psychology) and 3 credits of an American History class.
• In the School of Music, the following required courses are classified as international/ diversity courses: MUL 2110, MUH 3211 and MUH 3212.
• A student can vary the hours in the last three categories of general education within the constraints of no less than six and no more than twelve hours in any category with a total of twenty-seven (27) hours across the three categories. Music education majors may not vary hours in general education, but must complete them according to state mandates.

• The speech requirement for the music education degree is met through MUE 3311 and MUE 3330.
• The reading requirement for the music education degree is RED 3312.
• The introductory education and technology courses required by the College of Education are MUE 2040 and MUS 1360.
