Geomatics applies the geographic sciences to the needs of society. Present land values, rates of land development and environmental concerns require a broadly educated person to develop, manage and apply land information. Surveyors and mappers, the practicing component of geomatics, provide these professional services.

Geomatics addresses land information development and management. Geomatics students master methods of determining spatial relationships of important land features along with pertinent attributes using field survey, photogrammetry, remote sensing mapping, satellite positioning, or other techniques. This information is then integrated into digital land or geographic information systems and made suitable for use and analysis.

The undergraduate program was started in 1973 at the request of professional surveyors and mappers, who enthusiastically support the program and employ graduates. Master’s and Ph.D. degrees focusing on geomatics are available through the Department of Civil and Coastal Engineering.

Mission

The mission of the geomatics program is to provide its graduates with a quality education, to enhance their professionalism and to advance the discipline through research and dissemination of new knowledge.

Educational Objectives

  • Enhance the professional status and instill a sense of professionalism in future leaders in the field of geomatics,
  • Satisfy the public and private sector employment demand for geomatics professionals, and
  • Improve the competitiveness of our graduates by providing them with a quality knowledge base and lifelong learning skills.
