Geography

The Major: A degree in geography provides skills in high demand in today's job market. Techniques such as cartography (map-making), air photo interpretation, data base handling, geographic information systems (GIS) and computer-based cartography are used intensively in map production, regional planning and environmental assessment. These skills and the geographic perspective also open doors to employment in government agencies and private firms that deal with urban and regional planning, water management, environmental and market analysis, foreign service and education.
In addition to satisfying college and university requirements, geography majors are required to follow one of the following courses of study. Majors should take STA 2023 or 2122 to fulfill part of the gen. ed. math requirement.
Bachelor of Arts: GEO 2200, 2200L, 2410 (or 2420 or 2500), 3162C, 4100C or 3151, 4120C (or 4201 or 5105C or 5134C or 4167 or 5945C) and 4930.
Four courses from the following: GEO 2201, 3151, 3250, 3280, 3315, 3370, 3424, 3430, 3502, 3541, 3602, 4120C, 4167C, 4201C, 4221, 4281, 4285, 4431, 4554, 4620, 4970, 5105C, 5134C, 5346, 5556, 5567, 5615, 5809, 5839, and 5945C.
Select one regional geography course from the following: GEA 2210, 2270, 3223, 3410, 3500, 3600, 4465.
Bachelor of Science: GEO 2200, 2200L, 3162C, 4100C or 3151, 4124C (or 5105 or 5134 or 4167C or 5945), 4930, CHM 2040, PHY 2004, 2004L, 2005, 2005L, MET 1010, GLY 2010, SOS 3022, and 3022L.
One of the following: GEO 2410, 2420 or 2500.
Three of the following: GEO 3151, 3250, 3280, 3315, 3370, 4120C, 4167C, 4221, 4281, 4285, 4970, 5105C, 5134C, 5346, 5809 and 5945C.
Select one regional geography course from the following: GEA 2210, 2270, 3223, 3410, 3500, 3600, 4465.
Honors: Student with 3.5 overall junior/ senior level GPAs qualify for honors. High or highest honors requires an overall 3.5 average and a thesis, due no later than two weeks before graduation. A grade of A is required in GEO 4970, honors thesis.
The student shall, in consultation with the undergraduate coordinator, select two members of the faculty to serve as a committee to evaluate the honors thesis. Normally, these faculty will serve as advisers in the preparation of the thesis as well.
Combined BA/MA or BS/MS degree programs are available for top students. Interested students should contact the Graduate Coordinator early in their junior year for application and information.
The Minor: As a minor, geography offers useful complements to students of environmental sciences, human sciences, business, international studies, planning, agricultural sciences, travel and tourism, and to careers that require international understanding and knowledge of local and regional conditions.
A total of at least 15 credits is required. No more than six credits may be by transfer. Meet all college requirements for the minor:
- Choose One
: GEO 2200 or 2201.
- Choose One
: GEO 1010, 2410, 2420 or 2500.
- Three
GEA or GEO courses at the 3000 or higher level. Each course must be of at least three credits and none may be an individual work course.
Overseas Study: The department participates in an exchange program with the University of Utrecht. A course on the geography of Europe (GEA 3500) is regularly offered each summer in the Netherlands.
General Education: Department courses satisfy several areas, including international/diversity (I), social sciences (S) and physical and biological sciences (P, B). In addition, GEA 3223 satisfies the humanities (H) area.

To remain 'on track' for this major you must meet the following critical tracking criteria. The critical tracking courses appear in bold.

- Complete 1 additional Geography course (1 of the 2 must be GEO 2200) with a 2.5 GPA on all critical tracking coursework
