Academic Learning Compact - Microbiology and Cell Science
The Bachelor of Science in microbiology and cell science offers you flexibility in a curriculum that develops an excellent knowledge base and an understanding of concepts in microbiology, cell biology and the bio-molecular sciences. Emphasis will be placed on application of the scientific method to gain an understanding of the biological world at the cellular and molecular levels. You will learn to evaluate hypotheses, to interpret experimental data and to communicate results effectively.
Additional information is available from your major's website.
Before Graduating You Must
- Pass a microbiology and cell sciences competency test consisting of four parts, one part from each of the following required courses:
- MCB 3023 Principles of Microbiology
- MCB 4304 or PCB 4522 Genetics of Microorganisms or Molecular Genetics
- MCB 4203 or PCB 5235 Bacterial and Viral Pathogens or Immunology
- MCB 3023L and MCB 4034L (or equivalent) Laboratory for Principles of Microbiology and Advanced Microbiology Laboratory
- Satisfy the Florida statutes for the College-Level Academic Skills Requirement.
- Complete requirements for the baccalaureate degree, as determined by faculty.
Skills You Will Acquire in the Major (SLOs)
- Knowledge in microbial classification, comparative physiology and metabolism, genetic information expression and cellular regulation, and mechanisms of host and pathogen interaction.
- Analyze experimental data and interpret results in the cellular and molecular sciences.
- Demonstrate the ability to articulate experimental results clearly in speech and in writing in an accepted style of presentation.
