An introduction to the ideology and aesthetics of the major movements of the twentieth century avante-grade, focusing on developments in Paris, Berlin, Prague and Moscow. (H, N)
EUS 3220 Secret Police Under Communism

The course provides an overview of the secret-police forces and the political use of terror in the Central-European countries (Germany, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Romania and Bulgaria) between 1945-1990.
EUS 3300 Nationalism and the Idea of Europe

How a European identity arose along with the emergence of nationalism during the Reformation, the wars of religion and the Englightenment.
EUS 3400 Migration in Europe

The course examines migration in Europe looking at topics ranging from the first modern refugee crisis in the aftermath of World War I and the Russian Revolution to contemporary debates about immigration in the European Union.

EUS 3937 Applied European Language
Credits: 1; can be repeated up to 3 credits; Prereq: permission of instructor.
An enhancement section designed to accompany and complement area studies courses offered in various departments. Readings and discussion in this course will be in a continental European language to allow students to develop specific vocabulary and fluency related to the content of the companion course as well as to provide them with an international perspective on the issues of the main course.

HNG 1180 Elementary Hungarian: Review and Progress 1

Alternative to HNG 1130. This course is for students who have some experience in Hungarian. Reviews basic grammar and improves reading, writing and listening skills.
HNG 1182 Elementary Hungarian: Review and Progress 2
Credits: 3; Prereq: instructor permission.
An accelerated one-semester coverage of HNG 1130 and HNG 1131 for students with some experience in Hungarian, in preparation for HNG 2220.

Intermediate study of speaking, reading, writing and listening comprehension skills with new vocabulary and grammar.

TUR 1180 Elementary Turkish: Review and Progress
Credits: 3; Prereq: Instructor permission.
TUR 1180 is for students who have previous or heritage learning experience with Turkish language, but who are not advanced enough to take Intermediate Turkish (TUR2220). Students will gain competence in use of grammar, reading, listening and writing skill, particularly the use of the present simple and continuous tenses as well as the simple past.
TUR 1182 Preparation for Intermediate Turkish
Credits: 3; Prereq: Instructor permission.
Alternate course to TUR1180 for students who have had four years of high school Turkish or equivalent. The course focuses on grammar, particularly on the acquisition of future, past and past continuous tenses. Student comprehension and active use of all basic grammar points in relation to beginner level Turkish will be complete in preparation for Intermediate Turkish (TUR2220).

TUR 2340 Turkish for Heritage Learners 1
Credits: 3; Prereq: instructor permission.
For students with significant bilingual speaking and listening backgrounds. The main emphasis is on reading, writing and expanding vocabulary.
