A unique opportunity for students who are in the decision-making phase of their studies to test a career choice through practicum experience prior to completing professional courses.

This course is designed to provide students with the opportunity to study in a wide range of cultural settings.

HSC 3032 Foundations of Health Education
Credits: 3; Prereq: Prereq: HH-HEB majors, junor or senior standing; all universal tracking courses completed.

Theory and practice in the health education profession.

HSC 3102 Personal and Family Health
Credits: 3.

A survey of personal health concerns: emotional health; aging and death; alcohol, tobacco and drug abuse; physical fitness; nutrition and dieting; consumer health; chronic and communicable diseases; human sexuality; and environmental health. (S)

HSC 3133 Human Sexuality Education
Credits: 3; Prereq: HH-HEB majors, junor or senior standing; HSC 3032 with a grade of C or better.

Emphasis on content, issues, methodology and materials for the study of human sexuality. Prepares students to educate individuals and groups.

HSC 3134 Emotional Health and Counseling
Credits: 3; Prereq: HH-HEB majors, junor or senior standing; HSC 3032 with a grade of C or better.

This course is designed to acquaint students with theories of emotional well-being and health education, and the means of incorporating positive mental health practices into the health education programming and health counseling.

HSC 3143 Drug Education
Credits: 3; Prereq: HH-HEB majors, junor or senior standing; HSC 3032 and APK 2105C or the equivalent with a grade of C or better.

Provides a broad view of the elements of drug use and abuse, such as individual behavior, environmental factors and drugs. Drug taking will be approached in a factual stance; i.e., what has been documented to date, so that participants can separate speculation and bias from fact. The emphasis is also placed on methods pertaining to the preventive aspects of drug use and abuse.

HSC 3232C Exercise Therapy, Adapted Physical Activity and Health
Credits: 3; Prereq: HH majors, junior or senior standing, or instructor permission.

This course explores the art and science of effectively teaching exercise therapy, adapted physical activities, and healthy living strategies. Medical and health characteristics of common disabilities and methods for prescribing appropriate exercise therapy programs are presented. Multiple adapted equipment ideas will be presented to facilitate teaching in inclusive settings for all ages. Clinical experiences with individuals with disabilities are provided.

HSC 3201 Community and Environmental Health
Credits: 3; Prereq: HH-HEB majors, junor or senior standing; HSC 3032, SYG 2000 or equivalent and STA 2023 or equivalent with a grade of C or better.

A survey of community health organizations and contemporary health issues such as population growth, environment, poverty, medical care and disease.

HSC 3301 Health Education in Elementary Schools
Credits: 3; Prereq: HH-HEB majors, junor, senior or graduate standing.

Development of comprehensive health education programs in grades K-5, subject matter selection, curriculum planning, lesson and unit planning, and innovative approaches to health instruction.

HSC 3537 Health and Medical Terminology
Credits: 3.

Develops a working knowledge of terminology related to the human body in health and disease through descriptive definitions, practical applications, understanding word roots, combinations and medical abbreviations.

HSC 3574 Nutrition Education for Special Populations
Credits: 3; Prereq: HH-HEB majors, junor or senior standing; HSC 3032 and HUN 2201 or equivalent with a grade of C or better.

Development of nutrition education programs for selected population groups. Emphasis on educational techniques utilized to inform special populations of changing nutritional needs. Population groups such as ethnic minorities, the elderly, the pregnant female and the athlete will be discussed.

HSC 4302 Methods and Materials in Health Education
Credits: 3; Prereq: HH-HEB majors, senior standing; HSC 3032 with a grade of C or better; completion of 15 credits of HSC prefix coursework from the Department of Health Education and Behavior.

Fundamental strategies for health science education including conceptualizing instruction, specifying instructional objectives, planning units and lessons, using various instructional methods, selecting and using instructional materials, and evaluating the effectiveness of health instruction in school and community settings.

HSC 4450 Driver and Traffic Safety Education 1
Credits: 3; Prereq: junior or senior standing and a state driver's license.

Analysis of driver and traffic safety problems; training for efficient motor vehicle operation through experience with simulators, dual control cars and multiple car driving range.

HSC 4451 Driver and Traffic Safety Education 2
Credits: 3; Prereq or Coreq: HSC 4450.

Organization, administration, and teaching techniques of driver education for public high schools, including student teaching.

HSC 4593 HIV/AIDS Education
Credits: 3; Prereq: HH-HEB majors, junor or senior standing; HSC 3032 with a grade of C or better; non-majors must have junior or senior standing.

This seminar course will examine the medical, social, legal and educational implication of HIV/AIDS on individuals and society. The course format will include lectures, guest and student presentations, videos, and student-initiated discussions. The lectures will be provided by local, state, and national experts in the fields of medicine, epidemiology, law, education, and health promotion.

HSC 4624 Trends in International Health
Credits: 3; Prereq: HH-HEB majors, junor or senior standing; HSC 3032 with a grade of C or better. Non majors must have junior, senior standing.

An overview of problems and practices in international health including disease patterns and prevalence, contributing factors, organizational and governmental initiatives, and model programs, with special emphasis on problems amenable to health education interventions. (S, N)

HSC 4663 Community Health Methods in Injury Prevention and Control
Credits: 3; Prereq: HH-HEB majors, junor or senior standing; HSC 3032 with a grade of C or better. .

This course is designed to familiarize students with current theory and knowledge in the field of unintentional injury prevention and to prepare students to critically analyze current intervention strategies and explore new directions for unintentional injury prevention and control. Topics include the importance of injury as a problem, historical and conceptual underpinnings of injury prevention, epidemiology of injury, mechanisms of injury, basic concepts of injury prevention, the role of the law in injury prevention, and the role if injury surveillance on unintentional injuries.

HSC 4664 Health Communication for Consumers

Health communication processes and practices for health consumers and health professionals who facilitate health consumers. (WR)

HSC 4694 Worksite Health Promotion
Credits: 3; Prereq: HH-HEB majors, senior standing; HSC 3032 with a grade of C or better; completion of 15 credits of HSC prefix coursework from the Department of Health Education and Behavior.

Considerations in planning, implementing, and evaluating comprehensive health education and health promotion programs at the worksite including health risk appraisal, program design, and special educational strategies appropriate for the occupational setting.

HSC 4800 Health Education Professional Development
Credits: 3; Prereq: 4HH HEB majors only, must be taken the semester prior to internship, Must earn a C or better in HSC 3032.

Review and discussion of the Health Education field, career opportunities, Department policies for health education internship selection and registration, professional development information and preparation for future employment and/or graduate coursework in the health education field.

PET 3060 Motor Development

Human motor development is surveyed from embryonic growth through senescence. The developmental perspectives, physical growth, maturation and aging, perceptual motor development, physiological changes and exercise, sociocultural influences on motor development, and other topics are discussed.

PET 3203 Foundations and Principles of Coaching

Introduction to the foundations and principles of coaching in athletics. Topics include individual differences, motivational dimensions, sport as a social phenomenon, factors affecting performance and current research trends.

This course offers an in-depth background of the standards, policies and practices of organization, supervision and administration of athletic training programs.
