Community Health Education and Health Promotion
Specialization: Community Health Education
Specialization: Health Promotion
Specialization: Health Studies
Community health education is designed for students primarily interested in illness and disease prevention among special target groups within a particular community. Community health educators generally find employment in local, state or national governmental health agencies and in voluntary public health units such as the American Cancer Society, the March of Dimes and Planned Parenthood organizations.
Coursework in this area provides practical instruction in addressing various public health needs and problems through the use of a variety of theory-driven educational methods. This specialization also provides good background for students planning to enter a graduate program in health education or public health.
All coursework must be completed before the internship.
Health promotion provides training for students interested in working as a health educator for employee-assistance programs and corporate or hospital-based wellness centers. Many companies utilizing large employee populations have noticed a significant decrease in absenteeism and an increase in work productivity for those employees actively participating in an employee wellness program. In addition, insurance rates tend to be lower for those employees thus providing an incentive for employers to offer such programs.
Students choosing this specialization area are encouraged to seek elective coursework within the Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology.
All coursework must be completed before the internship.
Health studies is designed for students planning to work with specific population groups and/or specific health problems within the health education field. This specialization allows significant flexibility in completing necessary required coursework for the health education degree program as well as prerequisite coursework for graduate programs in related fields (public health, health administration, epidemiology and disease prevention). Health studies students are strongly encouraged to pursue a minor. Minors are listed in this guide, as well as in the online undergraduate catalog.
