Majors
The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders is a nationally accredited program offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in speech-language pathology, audiology and communication sciences. These are rapidly growing professions with competitive salaries.
Certified clinicians (graduate degree required) often work as a team with psychologists, teachers, parents, physicians and social workers to screen, diagnose and treat individuals ranging from infants to the elderly. Professionals can work in schools, clinics, hospitals, health-providing organizations and private practice. The profession offers a high degree of satisfaction to its practitioners because so many people have a communication disorder, which can have a significant impact on people's lives. In this major, students can choose an emphasis in speech-language pathology/audiology or phonetic sciences.
An academic/clinical program precedes study for a post-graduate degree, which is accredited by the Educational Standards Board in speech-language pathology and audiology. It is necessary to complete a master's degree in speech-language pathology and an Au.D. in audiology to qualify for these certifications:
By the end of semester five, students must meet the following requirements: Complete the following (12 hours minimum) or their equivalents:
Students are required to complete 32 hours in the major (with grades of C or better) and the college requirements for graduation. STA 2023, EEX 3312 (Exceptional People) and ENC 3254 (Writing in the Discipline) are also required. Majors should see a department adviser to create a program plan of study, which becomes the contact for graduation. Transfer students must satisfactorily complete no fewer than 20 credits in communication sciences and disorders at UF to complete a major in the department.
To graduate with this major, students must complete all university, college and major requirements.

Emphasis in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology

- Certificate of clinical competence in audiology awarded by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association,
- Certificate of clinical competence in speech-language pathology awarded by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association,
- Teacher certification issued by the state Department of Education, and
- State licensure issued by the Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology in the Agency for Health Care Administration.

- Transfer students may substitute COM 1000, or SPC 2600 or SPC 2300.
