Majors
All undergraduates should contact the undergraduate coordinator soon after enrolling at the university. Transfer credits in anthropology must be approved in writing by the undergraduate coordinator to count toward the degree program.
An undergraduate major must have a minimum of 34 semester hours in anthropology, including
Interdisciplinary Certificate and Minor: The department encourages students to choose a minor or an interdisciplinary certificate option in Latin American studies, African studies, Asian studies, women's studies, linguistics, Jewish studies or environmental studies. Relevant courses in anthropology may be used to fulfill some requirements. Students can combine anthropology courses with courses in other fields for an interdisciplinary major. A minor in anthropology is also available.
Overseas Study: Students are encouraged to participate in overseas studies in academic classes and in ethnographic and archeological field schools. The Yucatan, Mexico program is sponsored by the department. Other programs are available throughout the world. Anthropology major credit is given for appropriate courses.
General Education: The majority of courses in anthropology contribute to international studies and diversity (I) and social sciences (S). Some courses are also humanities (H) and biological science (B) requirements.
Courses: There are no prerequisites for 2000-level courses. Descriptions of new courses are posted outside Turlington Hall, Room 1112. Students in the honors program may take the honors sections of ANT 2301 Human Sexuality and Culture, ANT 2410 Cultural Anthropology, ANT 3514C Introduction to Biological Anthropology, and ANT 3620 Language and Culture. Honors students are also eligible at the sophomore level and above to take, with permission of the instructor, any graduate-level course. Honors students are encouraged to continue in the department's honors program.
Students are encouraged to take anthropology courses that include method, theory, and topical courses, as well as area courses in either the ethnographic or archaeological cultures of different regions.
Method, Theory and Topical Courses: ANT 3126, 3181, 3241, 3302, 3390, 3428, 3522, 4006, 4035, 4110, 4185, 4255, 4266, 4273, 4274, 4403, 4462, 4468, 4525, 4552, 4586, 4620, 4730.
Ethnographic and Archaeological Cultures Courses: ANT 3141, 3153, 3163, 3164, 3332, 3365, 3367, 3377, 4145, 4326, 4336, 4337, 4352, 4354.
Students concentrating in either cultural anthropology or archaeology are also encouraged to complete either an ethnographic study abroad program or an archaeological field school. It is recommended that these be completed before senior year.
* ANT 2000, 2410, 3140, 3514C and 3620 can be taken in fall or spring. All five of these classes are required.

Requirements for the Major
An undergraduate major must have a minimum of 34 semester hours in anthropology, including

- ANT 2410,
- ANT 3140,
- ANT 3620 and
- ANT 3514C.
- Majors are encouraged to take ANT 2000 in their first year of course work. Of the remaining 18 hours, 15 must be 3000 level and above.
- In addition, all anthropology majors are required to take STA 2023 Introduction to Statistics 1.
- All course work counted toward the major must have a grade of C or better.
