COM 4014 Communication and Gender.

Credits: 3; Prereq: COM 1000 or equivalent and consent of instructor.

An investigation of the role of communication in creating images of gender roles, differences in male/
female communication styles, and the implications of those images and styles for male/female relationships in a variety of contexts. GR-E†

COM 4022 Health Communication.

Credits: 3; Prereq: COM 1000 or equivalent and consent of instructor.

Survey of theory, research and practice of communication in the contexts of health care and health promotion.

COM 4024 Interpersonal Communication in Health Care and Promotion.

Emphasizes research and applications of interpersonal communication in health provider/client relationships and in the intermediary strategies for disseminating health information.

COM 4930 Special Topics in Communication.

Seminar study of theory and research in a specific area of communication.

ENC 3254 Professional Communication for the Discipline: Communication Sciences and Disorders

Credits: 3; Prereq: Junior or senior standing and one 1-2000 level English course.

A communication course adjusted to a specific professional discipline, the discipline to be determined by need. Covers major elements of organizational communication with emphasis on composition of reports, proposals, letters and memos, manuals and oral presentations. LIN 2210 Phonetic Theory and Transcription. F, S.

Credits: 4.

An introduction to human speech production, classification, and transcription. Includes intensive training in the use of the International Phonetics Alphabet for transcribing American English.

SPA 2024 Human Communication Dynamics. F, S.

Credits: 3.

An interdisciplinary course exploring a range of dynamic interactions in human communication. Topics will include pre- and post-natal communication, development of speech, parent/child communication, vocal/nonvocal communication, noise pollution and prosthetic devices. Normal and abnormal aspects of communication processes will be covered. (S)

An introduction to scientific methodologies, physics of sound and elementary instrumentation related to human speech communication.

SPA 3032 Fundamentals of Hearing. F, S.

Concepts and principles relevant to the normal hearing processes: acoustics, gross anatomy, psychophysical methods and basic subjective correlates of the auditory system.

SPA 3101 Speech Anatomy and Physiology. F, S.

An introduction to elementary anatomy, physiology and neurophysiology of the speaking mechanism.

SPA 4050 Clinical Observations in Speech—Language Pathology and Audiology. F, S.

Credits: 2; Senior year.

Students participate in 25 hours of supervised clinical observations of diagnostic and remediation at the UF Speech and Hearing Clinic.

SPA 4104 Neural Basis of Communication. F, S.

Credits: 3.

To provide students with a basic understanding of the structures and functions of the human nervous system and the neurological processes involved in communication and related functions and their disorders.

SPA 4250 Introduction to Speech Disorders. S.

Credits: 3; Prereq: LIN 2210 and SPA 3101.

This course addresses the following speech based disorders of communication: phonology motor speech; resonatory; voice and stuttering.

SPA 4302 Audiometry and Hearing Disorders. F.

Credits: 3; Prereq: SPA 3032.

Basic techniques in pure-tone and speech audiometry, measurements of middle-ear function and test interpretation. Supervised clinical/laboratory experience in hearing testing.

SPA 4321 Audiologic Rehabilitation. S.

Credits: 3; Prereq: SPA 4302 or consent of instructor.

Methods in auditory training and speechreading with hearing-impaired individuals and overview of aural rehabilitation.

SPA 4004 Language Development. F.

Credits: 3.

Study of stages and processes of language acquisition in addition to diagnosis and treatment, and observation of language disorders in children.

SPA 4402 Language Development and Disorders. S.

Credits: 3; Prereq: SPA 4004.

This course addresses the following language based disorders of communication: specific language impairment in children; traumatic brain injury; aphasia; dementia.

SPC 3130 Introduction to Language and

An investigation of language and social processes.

SPC 3331 Nonverbal Communication.

Credits: 3; Prereq: Major or minor or instructor’s approval, and COM 1000.

Survey of theory and research in nonverbal communication including eye behavior, facial expressions, gestures and vocal cues.

SPC 4301 Advanced Interpersonal Communication.

Credits: 3; Prereq: COM 1000 and SPC 2300 or equivalent.

A critical examination of selected theories in interpersonal communication. Topics include systems theory and the coordinated management of meaning.

SPC 4425 Small Group Communication.

Credits: 3; Prereq: COM 1000 or equivalent.

A survey of theory and research on communication in the context of small groups. Emphasis on decision-making communication processes.
