Geology

Read the sections describing general education and CLAS requirements. Refer especially to the Majors and Minors in the College section.

THE MAJOR: Students pursuing a major in geology may follow one of the following courses of study:

Bachelor of Arts: Designed for students who do not intend to pursue careers as professional geologists, but who do desire training in the geological sciences preparatory to pursuing advanced studies or careers in fields such as earth science teaching, law, business or other socio-environmental areas.
In addition to college and university requirements, students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in geology must complete the following core courses:

Bachelor of Science: To meet the minimum require-ments for a B.S. in geology, the student must satisfy all college and university graduation requirements as well as the following department course requirements.         Specific courses selected among the alternatives given will depend upon the student’s primary geologic interest. Students should contact the undergraduate coor-dinator in B125 or B129 Turlington Hall as early as possible.

A combined degree program is being developed; contact the department for information.

HONORS: For graduation with honors a student must attain a 3.5 overall junior/senior level average. For high honors students will complete two additional se-mesters of GLY 4905 Individual Work for three credits each semester with a grade of B or higher. The student must prepare an abstract and thesis to be approved by the student’s research adviser who recommends the student to the department for high honors. The thesis must con-tain experimental results and discussion. For highest honors the student must have an average of 3.7 or higher in all upper level courses and the requirements as listed for high honors.

THE MINOR: A total of 17 hours of geology are re-quired. A minimum of nine hours must be completed at UF and nine hours must be at the 3000 level or higher. No more than one hour of independent study will be ac-cepted. All courses must be at a grade of C or better and all students should consult the undergraduate adviser.

The following core courses are required: GLY 2010C or 2026C and GLY 2100C or 3105C. Nine additional hours may be selected from: GLY 3200C, 3603C, 4155, 4310C, 4400C, 4552 and 5827.

OVERSEAS STUDY: Consult a department adviser or the UF International Center in 123 Grinter.

GENERAL EDUCATION: Courses designated with a (P) count toward the physical science requirement.

NOTE: Read the Academic Advising section of this catalog regarding the Gordon Rule communication and computation requirement. Many general education courses qualify; check the schedule of courses. Six gen-eral education credits must be international/diversity (I).
