Read the sections describing general education and CLAS requirements. Refer especially to the Majors and Minors in the College section.

THE MAJOR: The Center for Studies in Criminol-ogy and Law supports the largest interdisciplinary degree program at UF. The number of students seeking to pursue interests in criminology, criminal justice and legal stud-ies at the undergraduate level exceeds the resource base of the center. To ensure the quality of the degree program, the center has adopted a selective policy for continuation in the major beyond semester four. Students must earn a cumulative grade point average of 2.80 or higher and complete with grades of B or better 12 hours of founda-tion courses in social sciences, humanities or statistics that are related to criminology and law.

Core Requirements

The criminology major requires 31 semester hours. A maximum of 12 semester hours toward the major may be transferred from another college or university and no more than six hours of 1000 or 2000-level course work (including CCJ 2202) may be applied toward the major.

Freshman-sophomore transfer credits will be ac-cepted only for the following courses or their equivalents: Introduction to Criminology, Introduction to Criminal Justice, Introduction to Law Enforcement, Introduction to Criminal Law, Introduction to Criminal Procedure and Introduction to Corrections. At least 19 semester hours must be earned in CCJ-listed courses taken at UF.

The following courses are required of all majors: CCJ 3024 Advanced Principles of Criminal Justice, CCJ 3704 Research Methods in Criminology and CCJ 4604 Criminological Theory. In addition, all majors are re-quired to complete CCJ 4204 Criminal Law or CCJ 4273 Criminal Procedure.

CCJ 4905 Individual Work and CCJ 4940 Internship in Criminology may be repeated, but no more than three hours of each may be used to satisfy major requirements or the minimum credit hour requirements for graduation.

Interdisciplinary Emphasis

It is essential that those majoring in criminology obtain interdisciplinary breadth in the study of criminology and law. Majors should enroll in relevant courses offered outside the center in social and behavioral sciences, law and humanities. A student can satisfy up to 12 hours of the total 31 hours required for the major with courses (with grades of C or higher) taught in various depart-ments with prefixes other than CCJ. Students should consult the center for a list of non-CCJ approved courses. A minimum of 19 semester hours must be completed with a CCJ prefix. Interdisciplinary credits may not apply to more than one major.

HONORS: To graduate with honors students must have an overall junior/senior level grade point average of 3.5 or higher. To graduate with high honors or highest honors students must apply in writing to the center and complete and successfully defend an honors thesis under the supervision of a three-member honors thesis commit-tee. The distinction between high and highest honors is made from assessment of the senior thesis.

Ordinarily honors program students apply to the cen-ter’s honors program at least two semesters before gradua-tion and register for three hours of CCJ 4970 Senior Thesis for the two semesters they are preparing their honors thesis.

THE MINOR: A minor consists of 15 hours of work completed with grades of C or better. All criminology minors must complete CCJ 3024 Advanced Principles of Criminal Justice and either CCJ 4204 Criminal Law or CCJ 4273 Criminal Procedure. A maximum of three semester hours may completed (with a C or higher) in courses with prefixes other than CCJ. See center for approved list.

A selective admissions policy applies to this minor. Students with a grade point average of 3.00 or higher will be admitted. These hours will not apply to both the minor and the  major.

OVERSEAS STUDY: Consult an adviser or the UF International Center in 123 Grinter.

NOTE: Read the Academic Advising section of this catalog regarding the Gordon Rule communication and computation requirement. Many general education courses qualify; check the schedule of courses. Six general education credits must be international/diversity (I).
