Communication Sciences and Disorders

Read the sections describing general education and CLAS requirements. Refer especially to the Majors and Minors in the College section.

THE MAJOR: The department offers a major in communication sciences and disorders. Students can choose an emphasis in speech-language pathol-ogy/audiology or phonetic sciences.

This is a limited access major. By semester five and to continue in the major, students must meet the follow-ing requirements: 2.8 or higher GPA; complete two (6 credits) of the following courses or their equivalents with grades of B or better—PSY 2013, SPA 3002, SPA 2024, COM 1000, SPC 2300 and SPC 2600.  All students should take PSY 2013. UF freshmen and sophomores should take SPA 2024 and/or 3002 to prepare for the major.

Students are required to complete 33 hours and the college requirements for graduation. STA 2122 or an equivalent is also required. Majors should work out a planned program with their department adviser. Both the adviser and the student will sign the CSD course re-quirement schedule for graduation. This signed program becomes the contract for graduation. Transfer students must satisfactorily complete no fewer than 20 credits in communication sciences and disorders to complete a major in the department.

HONORS: To be eligible for honors the student must have an average junior/senior level GPA of 3.5. For high or highest honors the student must also have completed a minimum of three credits in COM 4931 (Honors in Communication) and a thesis judged to be of high qual-ity.

OVERSEAS STUDY: Consult an adviser or the UF International Center in 123 Grinter.

GENERAL EDUCATION: SPA 2024, Human Communication Dynamics and COM 1000, Introduction to Communication Studies, satisfy the social science requirement.

Emphasis in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiol-ogy

A pre-professional academic/clinical program pre-cedes study for the master’s degree, which is accredited by the Educational Standards Board in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. To qualify for these certifica-tions or licenses, it is necessary to complete a master’s degree:

NOTE: Read the Academic Advising section of this catalog regarding the Gordon Rule communication and computation requirement. Many general education courses qualify; check the schedule of courses. Six gen-eral education credits must be international/diversity (I).
