Chemistry

Read the sections describing general education and CLAS requirements. Refer especially to the Majors and Minors in the College section.

THE MAJOR: All majors in the standard chemistry track must complete at least the following program (this may include equivalent transfer course work):

Chemtrak: An alternative major for students who are accepted into CHM 2047 is         Completion of these courses and their prerequisites in the three options will satisfy the minimum requirements for a major in chemistry. Required CHM courses must be completed with minimum C grades within two attempts. Any language acceptable to the college may be taken with this minimum program. Languages may be taken on an S/U basis.

The required courses in the standard chemistry track are generally offered every regular term. Because of budg-etary and other restrictions, summer schedules cannot be predetermined. Summer offerings will usually be on a Term C (12 weeks) basis.

To avoid delays in graduation, students should plan their programs accordingly. When possible, the student is advised to complete the following or the equivalent during the first two years: four semesters of chemistry, three semesters of calculus and two semesters of physics.

A.C.S. Certified Program: To receive American Chemical Society certification and adequate preparation for the profession, a student must complete a chemistry major. If credit is earned for CHM 4411 and either CHM 4412 or 4413, credit must also be earned for either CHM 4411L or 4413L and for either CHM 3610L, 4302L, 5511L or CHS 5110L. The language requirement must be met in German, French or Russian.

THE MAJOR WITH BIOCHEMISTRY OPTION: Students with a special interest in bio-chemistry may satisfy requirements for a major with the following set of courses:

         Instrumental Analysis (CHM 4130-4130L)
Chemical Aspects of Cellular Control (CHM 4304)
         Biophysical Chemistry (CHM 4413)
         Radiochemistry Laboratory (CHS 5110L)
Basic Biology of Microorganisms (MCB 3020)
         Genetics of Microorganisms (MCB 4303)
Prokaryotic Cell structure and Function (MCB 4403)
Energy Transformation in Microorganisms (MCB 5458)
Mammalian Molecular Biology and Genetics (BCH 4411)
         Introduction to Biophysics (PHZ 4710)
         Immunology (PCB 5235)
* List to be updated annually

HONORS: A student must attain a 3.5 overall jun-ior/senior level average.

High honors will be awarded with a junior/ senior level grade point average of 3.5 or higher, a 3.3 or higher average for all chemistry course work attempted—exclu-sive of CHM 4910 and CHM 4905—and completion of a minimum of six semester hours of Senior Research, CHM 4910. In addition, a thesis based upon the research project must be presented, together with a letter of rec-ommendation from the faculty supervisor. The thesis must contain both discussion and experimental results.

The research will normally be directed by a member of the chemistry faculty. With department approval, a problem that is chemical in nature may be conducted outside the chemistry department. Contact Dr. J. A. Dey-rup or an undergraduate coordinator in chemistry to obtain approval for this option.
Highest honors can be awarded to students whose thesis and overall program are of exceptional merit.

THE MINOR: The requirements for a minor in chemistry are a general chemistry sequence, CHM 3120-3120L; either CHM 2210-2211-2211L or CHM 3217-3218-2211L; and three additional credits selected from CHM 3400, 3610 or any 4000 level CHM course, with a grade of C or better.
For students in the Chemtrak program, the require-ments for a chemistry minor are CHM 2047-2047L, CHM 3120-3120L, CHM 3217-3218-2211L and three credits selected from CHM 3417, CHM 3610 or any 4000 level CHM course, all with a grade of C or better.

For either minor, at least nine required chemistry credits must be completed at UF.

OVERSEAS STUDY: Consult a department adviser or the UF International Center office in 123 Grinter.

GENERAL EDUCATION: Successful completion of any chemistry course counts toward the physical science general education requirement. Non-science students who wish to learn something about chemistry may take CHM 1083 or the CHM 1020-1021 sequence. Majors in the physical, biological or engineering sciences should take a 2000 level sequence.

GENERAL CHEMISTRY: These general chemistry course sequences are available:

CHM 1083 is a terminal general education course that explores chemistry in terms of consumer products. This course meets pre-professional requirements in cer-tain areas of agriculture.

CHM 1020-1021 is a terminal course that surveys a broad range of topics in chemistry and its importance to modern society. This sequence meets pre-professional requirements in the colleges of Natural Resources and Environment and Nursing, and some majors in agricul-ture.

CHM 2040-2041-2045L-2046-2046L and CHM 2045-2045L-2046-2046L are standard general chemistry sequences. Either sequence meets the pre-professional requirement for a broad range of science and engineering majors. Both sequences presume students have a func-tional command of high school algebra and chemistry.

CHM 2045-2045L-2046-2046L is the main general chemistry program. This two-semester sequence is for students with good backgrounds in high school chemis-try (Chemistry II or Honors Chemistry I) and high school mathematics (through Algebra II or MAC 1147). Gener-ally necessary are SAT scores of 550 quantitative and 1100 total, and a sufficient chemistry background as evaluated by the SAT II chemistry test or other means (see below).

CHM 2040-2041-2045L-2046-2046L is an alterna-tive three-semester sequence. This is offered for students with weaker but satisfactory backgrounds in high school chemistry and algebra. SAT scores of 950 to 1100 are typically necessary, together with a minimum chemistry background, such as high school Chemistry I and algebra II (or MAC 1147).

Students must present a satisfactory SAT II chemis-try test score prior to registering for CHM 2045. Students who have taken the SAT II test elsewhere may use the score to register here if this has been received by the university. It generally takes 1-2 months to have a score transmitted. Entering students should plan ahead by scheduling this test and having ETS send the score di-rectly to UF. The SAT II chemistry test is available on campus on numerous occasions each semester. Once taken locally, scores are posted and available for registra-tion purposes the next working day. Contact the Office of Instructional Resources for local test information.

Advanced Placement (AP) and International Bacca-laureate (IB) scores may be substituted for SAT II chem-istry chemistry scores. Students with any chem-istry AP (3 or above) or IB score (4 or above) may register for CHM 2045 without taking the SAT II chemistry test. In addition, higher AP and IB scores provide course credit and advance standing. Consult the Academic Advising section for details.

CHM 2047 and 2047L is a one-semester program for students with stronger backgrounds in chemistry. This allows the student to move more quickly into advanced work.

Prospective transfer students should take all of their general chemistry work at a single institution. Most transfer students who have completed one semester or one or two quarters at another university or community col-lege should register for CHM 2041-2045L rather than for CHM 2046-2046L.

All students should complete their general chemistry studies without interruption.   Questions should be di-rected to a chemistry undergraduate adviser in LEI 214.

Registered students absent from a first scheduled laboratory session will be assumed to be dropping and their place will be made available to anyone waiting to add the course. Anyone missing the first two sessions of a laboratory course, and having thus missed required safety instruction, will not be allowed to start late, regardless of reason.

HONORS COURSES: The Chemistry Department offers honors sequences paralleling its 2000 and 3000 level courses which give superior students smaller classes and a more individual and intensive educational opportu-nity.

The various honor sequences are not prerequisite for each other. For example, one may apply for Organic Chemistry Honors after having completed any of the general chemistry sequences. Students with above aver-age performance records are encouraged to apply for enrollment in these courses. Seniors may apply to take graduate (5000 and 6000 level) courses.

NOTE: Read the Academic Advising section of this catalog regarding the Gordon Rule com-mu-nication and computation requirement. Many general education courses qualify; check the schedule of courses. Six gen-eral education credits must be coded interna-tional/diversity (I).
