planning a major in botany, either in the College of Agriculture or the
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, should consult the under-graduate
coordinator in botany as early as possible. Stu-dents who want a B.S. in
botany can pursue one of two tracks of studythe basic or the pre-professional
(e.g., medical school). Each track consists of foundation and major requirements,
as follows:

BIOLOGY EDUCATION PROGRAM: Students who plan to teach biology in secondary schools may major in botany and should consult the undergraduate coordinator.
HONORS: A student must have a grade point average of 3.5 at the junior/senior level. Students working for high or highest honors must enroll in BOT 4905 for 1 or 2 semesters, respectively, and produce a thesis based upon independent research. Students must carry out the re-search under the direction of a botany faculty member(s) and prepare a thesis based on the research, which is to be submitted to and approved by the students research adviser. Approval for honors work must be secured from the undergraduate coordinator before enrolling in BOT 4905.
THE MINOR: Students need a minimum of 15 se-mester credits with a grade of C or better. At least three courses (none of which may be individual study), of no fewer than three credits each, must be at the 3000 level or higher. No more than three may be individual study. The undergraduate coordinator in botany has additional in-formation.
OVERSEAS STUDY: Consult the undergraduate co-ordinator or the UF International Center in 123 Grinter.
GENERAL EDUCATION: Seven botany courses are authorized for general education. Those recommended for non-science majors (no prerequisites) are Introductory Botany (BOT 2010), Practical Plant Taxonomy (BOT 2710) and Plants in Human Affairs (BOT 2800). Other courses (with prerequisites) are BOT 2011, 3143, 3303 and PCB 3043.
NOTE: Read the Academic Advising section of this catalog regarding the Gordon Rule communication and computation requirement. Many general education courses qualify; check the schedule of courses. Six general education credits must be international/diversity (I).
