Read the sections describing general education and CLAS requirements. Refer especially to the Majors and Minors in the College section.

The African studies faculty is composed of nearly 100 members campus-wide who teach more than 50 courses solely on Africa and many others that give some attention to the African continent and its peoples.

MINOR: The Center for African Studies offers a mi-nor in African studies that can be taken in conjunction with a department or interdisciplinary major leading to the bachelor’s degree in the colleges of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Agriculture, Education, Fine Arts, Journalism and Communications and the Business Administration.

The minor in African studies is awarded via an inter-disciplinary program (outside the major discipline) on the various dimensions of the African continent and its peoples. The minor is intended to provide a solid foundation for careers in teaching and research as well as in other professional work for which knowledge of Africa is essential.

The requirements for the minor can be fulfilled by following one of several tracks requiring 15 credit hours (16 hours for the African Languages and Literature track, with 10 of these in study of an African language).  For complete information on the different tracks and courses, please consult the center’s web site or the under-graduate coordinator, 427 Grinter Hall, 392-2183.

OVERSEAS STUDY: The center offers two academic year programs for overseas study. Both programs include a language component. Students may undertake Swahili at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania (East Africa) or Shona at the University of Zimbabwe in Harare, Zimbabwe (Southern Africa). Summer study abroad programs also are offered. Contact the Center for African Studies for more information.
