School Requirements
Most music majors will begin
their study at the pre-professional level. For all undergraduate
degrees in the school, the following courses must be completed with grades
of C or higher before a student can ad-vance to the professional level:
-
Theory of Music (MUT 1121, 1122, 2126, 2127)
-
Secondary Piano (MVK 1111, 1112, 2221, 2222) or pass the piano proficiency
exam
-
Musical Styles (MUL 2110)
-
Performance (MV_, 14__, 24__) (Four semesters)
-
Ensemble (MUN _ _ _ _, as required by your degree track)
-
Recital Attendance (MUS 1010, four semesters with grades of S)
For admission to the
professional level of study, all music majors must complete:
-
Musicianship Assessment Jury, taken at the end of the theory sequence (usually
60 hrs.)
-
Secondary Piano Levels I to IV with grades of C or better or successful
completion of the secondary piano proficiency exam.
-
Musical Styles (MUL 2110) with a grade of C or better.
-
The Pre-professional Performance Jury (taken the last semester of MV_2_)
-
Ensemble semesters as required by the student’s degree track.
-
Four semesters of Recital Attendance (MUS 1010) with grades of S.
Musicianship Skills Juries
will take place at the end of each semester of theory. The Musicianship
Assessment Jury will be taken after completing four semesters of theory.
All students must pass the Musicianship Assessment Jury whether theory
courses are completed at UF or are transferred from another institution.
Community college transfer
students who have completed theory courses at the community college
level may take the Musicianship Assessment Jury at the end of their first
semester at UF.
Provisional acceptance as
a music major is given to students who seem to have the potential to become
music majors but who are not adequately prepared to begin the theory sequence.
Successful completion of MUT 1001, Rudiments of Music, makes a student
eligible for classification as a pre-professional music major. A
student can be classified as provisional for only two semesters.
Music majors must earn a
minimum grade of C in each required music course, both to fulfill degree
requirements and to advance to the next level. All music students must
stand for a performance examina-tion each term they are enrolled in performance
study. No course may be repeated more than once, except for ensembles,
performance courses and project courses. Consult School’s Music Student
Information Hand-book for specific requirements.
