The Major: An undergraduate major in religion consists of 10 courses (30 credit hours) with grades of C or better. These courses must be taken from the introductory, intermediate and advanced levels of the religion curriculum and they must expose the student to both eastern and western thought.

Undergraduate majors are required to complete: one course in Asian religion (REL 2002, REL 3330, REL 3336, REL 3338, REL 4147), one course in Islam (REL 2362, REL 3367, REL 3370, REL 4369), and one course in Jewish or Christian Scripture (REL 2210, REL 2240, REL 3249, REL 3252, REL 4293). In addition, all majors must complete REL 3931 (during their Junior year), and complete a total of three 4000-level courses, at least one of which must be a comparative study course (REL 4933).

Majors may not count more than three introductory courses (2000-level) toward their thirty hours. No more than three courses (nine credit hours) may be in approved cognate courses from other departments and no more than four courses (twelve credit hours) may be transferred from another institution. Every two semesters all majors must consult with the undergraduate adviser.

Honors: Candidates for honors must have a minimum junior/senior level grade point average of 3.5 for both their last 60 credit hours and all religion courses. For high or highest honors, candidates must also write an honors thesis (REL 4932) that receives a grade of B+ or A.

The Minor: A minor in religion consists of five courses (15 hours) with grades of C or better. Three of these courses must be taken at the intermediate or advanced level at UF. All students must consult an adviser.

Accelerated BA/MA Program: A combined bachelor's/master's program is available for students who have the ability to pursue an accelerated program leading to the Master of Arts in Religion. Between nine and twelve semester hours of approved graduate-level courses may be used for both the undergraduate and graduate degrees. All other requirements for both degrees must be met. Religion majors and majors in other fields who have 15 hours of credit at the 3000-level or above including the Junior Seminar are eligible for the program. Students should apply to the program during the second semester of the junior year. The admissions process will consider applicants' achievements in upper division religion courses. Applicants must present a minimum 3.2 GPA, a score of at least 1100 on the Graduate Record Exam and three letters of recommendation in order to be admitted. For further information, students may contact either the Undergraduate or Graduate Coordinator of the Department of Religion.

General Education: Most religion courses fulfill general education requirements in humanities (H). Students taking religion courses to fulfill general education should take these courses at the introductory (2000) or intermediate (3000) level.

There are no prerequisites for 2000 level courses. Detailed descriptions of current and prospective courses are available in 107 Anderson prior to registration. Consult individual faculty members as well.
