The Major: The standard major must complete at least the following program (this may include equivalent transfer coursework):

  • General chemistry (CHM 2040-2041-2045L-2046-2046L or CHM 2045-2045L-2046-2046L or CHM 2045-2045L-2051-2046L or CHM 2047-2047L)
  • Analytical chemistry (CHM 3120-3120L-4130-4130L)
  • Organic chemistry (CHM 2210-2211-2211L)
  • Inorganic chemistry (CHM 3610)
  • Physical chemistry (CHM 4411-4412 or CHM 4411-4413)

  • MAP 2302 is encouraged.

Required CHM courses must be completed with minimum C grades within two attempts. Any language acceptable to the college may be taken with this minimum program. Languages may be taken on an S/U basis.

The required courses in the standard chemistry track are generally offered every regular term. Because of budgetary and other restrictions, summer schedules cannot be predetermined. Summer offerings will usually be on a Term C (12 weeks) basis.

A.C.S. Certified Program: To receive American Chemical Society certification and adequate preparation for the profession, a student must complete the standard chemistry major. In addition, credit must be earned for CHM 3610L and an additional six credits of advanced work in chemistry courses such as CHM 4207, CHM 4235, CHM 4272, CHM 4302L, CHM 4304, CHM 4453, CHM 4910, and CHS 5110L. If CHM 4910 (Senior Research) is used, a thesis must be written. The language requirement must be met in German, French or Russian.

The Major with Biochemistry Option: Students with a special interest in biochemistry may satisfy requirements for a major with the following set of courses:

  • General chemistry (CHM 2040-2041-2045L-2046-2046L or CHM 2045-2045L-2046-2046L or CHM 2045-2045L-2051-2046L or CHM 2047-2047L)
  • Analytical chemistry (CHM 3120-3120L)
  • Organic chemistry (CHM 3217 or CHM 2210-2211)
  • Bio-organic chemistry (CHM 3218)
  • Organic chemistry laboratory (CHM 2211L)
  • Inorganic chemistry (CHM 3610)
  • Biophysical chemistry (CHM 3400-4413L)
  • Biochemistry laboratory (CHM 4302L)
  • Biological science (BSC 2010-2010L-2011-2011L)
  • Analytical Geometry and Calculus (MAC 2311-2312)
  • Physics (PHY 2053-2053L-2054-2054L)
  • Basic Biology of Microorganisms (MCB 3020)
  • Biochemistry electives (a minimum of 6 credits) selected from Instrumental Analysis (CHM 4130-4130L), Chemical Aspects of Cellular Control (CHM 4304), Biophysical Chemistry (CHM 4413), Radiochemistry Laboratory (CHS 5110L), Genetics of Microorganisms (MCB 4303), Prokaryotic Cell Structure and Function (MCB 4403), Energy Transformation in Microorganisms (MCB 5458), Mammalian Molecular Biology and Genetics (BCH 4411), Introduction to Biophysics (PHZ 4710), Immunology (PCB 5235), Genetics (PCB 3063).

Honors: A student must attain a 3.5 overall junior/senior level average.

High honors will be awarded with a junior/ senior level grade point average of 3.5 or higher, a 3.3 or higher average for all chemistry coursework attempted-exclusive of CHM 4910 and CHM 4905-and completion of a minimum of six semester hours of Senior Research, CHM 4910. In addition, a thesis based upon the research project must be presented, together with a letter of recommendation from the faculty supervisor. The thesis must contain both discussion and experimental results.

The research will normally be directed by a member of the chemistry faculty. With department approval, a problem that is chemical in nature may be conducted outside the chemistry department. Contact Dr. J. A. Deyrup or an undergraduate coordinator in chemistry to obtain approval for this option.

Highest honors can be awarded to students whose thesis and overall program are of exceptional merit.

The Minor: The requirements for a minor in chemistry are a general chemistry sequence; CHM 3120-3120L; either CHM 2210-2211-2211L or CHM 3217-3218-2211L; and three additional credits selected from CHM 3400, 3610, any 4000 level CHM course or CHS 5110L, with a grade of C or better. At least nine chemistry credits must be completed at UF.

General Education: Successful completion of any chemistry course counts toward the physical science general education requirement. Non-science students who wish to learn something about chemistry may take CHM 1083 or the CHM 1020-1021 sequence. Majors in the physical, biological or engineering sciences should take a 2000 level sequence.

General Chemistry: The following general chemistry course sequences are available:

CHM 1083 is a terminal general education course that explores chemistry in terms of consumer products. This course meets pre-professional requirements in certain areas of agriculture.

CHM 1020-1021 is a terminal sequence that surveys a broad range of topics in chemistry and its importance to modern society. This sequence meets pre-professional requirements in the colleges of Natural Resources and Environment, the College of Nursing and some majors in agriculture.

CHM 2040-2041-2045L-2046-2046L and CHM 2045-2045L-2046-2046L are standard general chemistry sequences. Either sequence meets the pre-professional requirement for a broad range of science and engineering majors. Both sequences presume students have a functional command of high school algebra and chemistry. For placement into the several Chemistry sequences please see the information in the Academic Advisement section of the catalog. CHM 2040 will not be offered after Summer 2002 and CHM 2041 will not be offered after Fall 2002.

CHM 2045-2045L-2046-2046L is the main general chemistry program. This two-semester sequence is for students with good backgrounds in high school chemistry (Chemistry II or Honors Chemistry I) and high school mathematics (through Algebra II or MAC 1147).

CHM 2040-2041-2045L-2046-2046L is an alternative three-semester sequence. This is offered for students with weaker but satisfactory backgrounds in high school chemistry and algebra.

For placement into the appropriate first course in chemistry, please see the information in the Academic Advising section of the catalog.

CHM 2047 and 2047L is a one-semester program for entering students with strong backgrounds in chemistry, normally reflected by high AP or IB chemistry test scores. This program allows students to move more quickly into advanced work.

Prospective transfer students should take all of their general chemistry work at a single institution. Most transfer students who have completed one semester or one or two quarters at another university or community college should register for CHM 2041-2045L rather than for CHM 2046-2046L.

All students should complete their general chemistry studies without interruption. Questions should be directed to a chemistry undergraduate adviser in 214 LEI.

Introduction to General Chemistry: CHM 1025 is offered for students who wish to strengthen their understanding of basic concepts of atomic structure and stoichiometry before beginning the general chemistry sequence (CHM 2045-2045L-2046-2046L). It is a two-credit, S/U-graded course. A Chemistry Readiness Assessment is offered on ISIS, and the score achieved allows both students and advisors to evaluate whether CHM 1025 or CHM 2045 is the most appropriate first course in chemistry for a particular person.

Attendance Requirement: Anyone missing the first two sessions of a laboratory course, and having thus missed required safety instruction, will not be allowed to start late, regardless of reason.
