Health Science Education - School Health

School Health Education is a teaching education program which meets certification requirements of the state of Florida for specializations in grades K - 12. Completion of the School Health Education track will prepare students to serve as teachers of health and related life sciences in schools and as coordinators of school health programs. It also meets the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) certification requirements. After successful completion of the first 60 credit hours of lower-division course work, students are allowed to continue on the school health track into their junior year. Requirements for continuation on the school health track include completion of the first 60 hours with an overall 2.5 GPA, passing scores on all portions of the CLAST exam, and completion of the following core preprofessional courses within the College of Education:

  • EDF 1005 Introduction to Education
  • EME 2040 Intro. to Ed. Technology
  • EDG 2701 Teaching Diverse Populations

To remain 'on track' for this major you must meet the following critical tracking criteria. *The critical tracking courses appear in bold.

Semester 1:

  • 2.5 UF GPA required for sems 1-5
  • SAT score of 960 or EACT score of 20
  • Complete 2 of the 11 critical tracking courses with a 2.0 GPA on tracking courses (PSY2012, (SYG2000 or SYG2010), (SPC2600 or AEE3030C), HSC2100, PET2320C, PET2350C, HUN2201, any statistics, EDF1005, EME2040, and EDG2701)

Semester 2:

  • Complete 3 additional courses of the 11 tracking courses with a 2.0 GPA on tracking courses

Semester 3:

  • Complete 3 additional courses of the 11 tracking courses with a 2.0 GPA on tracking courses

Semester 4:

  • Complete all 11 critical tracking courses with a 2.0 GPA on all tracking courses

Minor in Health Science Education

The minor in Health Science Education is designed to provide a basic understanding of the field of Health Education and an opportunity to gain background in a variety of health issues related to disease prevention and health promotion. Although the minor alone does not fully satisfy requirements for teacher certification in health, students do have the opportunity to choose courses which will partially satisfy certification requirements.

The minor is open to students of all disciplines classified at the junior and senior level who achieve and maintain an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher. The minor in Health Science Education requires the completion of at least 15 credit hours of HSC coursework as specified below. Students should refer to the course descriptions section of the undergraduate catalog for a listing of necessary pre-requisites for each course.
