All studio art and photography courses, except where noted as non-major courses, are restricted to students with a major in the School of Art and Art History. Non-majors wishing to register for the 2000 level courses, may obtain written permission from the instructor no earlier than the drop/add period. Each semester we offer non-major courses in areas such as ceramics and graphic design. The latter’s courses are graduate level and restricted to advanced standing seniors and graduate students.

The study of art teaching practices in the public schools. Emphasis on art curriculum, planning, art instructional strategies, art room management, and methods of evaluation in art.

ARE 4243 The Principles of Teaching Art.

The foundations of art teaching including aesthetics, art criticism, art history, the psychology of art, child growth in art, the history of art teaching, and research in art education.

ARE 4244 Experiences in Teaching Art.

Teaching art to children, adolescents and adults in the Saturday morning art school. Students will write lesson plans, analyze art expression problems of their students, analyze the learning process of students and evaluate students.

ARE 4314 Art Education for Elementary Schools.
Credits: 2 to 3; Prereq: HUM2511 highly recommended, second semester standing in the Elementary ProTeach Program; Coreq: A ProTeach field experience must be taken with this course in fall and spring semesters.
This course is intended to assist the preparing classroom teacher in developing a basic knowledge of art and of art teaching at the elementary level.
