In addition to the above degrees, a curriculum is offered leading to the Bachelor of Arts with emphasis in ethno-musicology, music history, performance or theory/composition. Mission StatementRecognizing the value of music to our culture, society, and individual experience, the School of Music at the University of Florida is committed to the teaching and development of musicians, music educators, and scholars. As a vital component of one of the leading AAU research universities in the nation, the School of Music fully encourages scholarly research, creative activity, and interdisciplinary studies across all degree programs. Graduate studies in the School of Music are expanding to include and support a broad range of music degrees and programs. This exemplifies the School's vision, its continued investment in its students, and the University of Florida's growing presence as a distinguished institution. AdmissionAdmission to any curricula in the School of Music includes an audition and acceptance in a performance area. A minimum grade point average of 2.0 is required, except in music education where 2.5 is required. Prospective majors should contact the school's director of admissions as early as possible. School RequirementsFor admission to the professional level of study, all music majors must complete:
Musicianship Skills Juries will take place at the end of each semester of theory. The Musicianship Assessment Jury will be taken after completing four semesters of theory. All students must pass the Musicianship Assessment Jury whether theory courses are completed at UF or are transferred from another institution. Community college transfer students who have completed theory courses at the community college level may take the Musicianship Assessment Jury at the end of their first semester at UF. Provisional acceptance as a music major is given to students who seem to have the potential to become music majors but who are not adequately prepared to begin the theory sequence. Successful completion of MUT 1001, Rudiments of Music, makes a student eligible for classification as a pre-professional music major. A student can be classified as provisional for only two semesters. Music majors must earn a minimum grade of C in each required music course, both to fulfill degree requirements and to advance to the next level. All music students must stand for a performance examination each term they are enrolled in performance study. No course may be repeated more than once, except for ensembles, performance courses and project courses. Consult School's Music Student Information Handbook for specific requirements.
