Mission
Educational Objectives
Combined BS/MS Program
Degree Programs
Admission Requirements
Everything Americans use is composed of materials, from computer chips to flexible concrete skyscrapers, from plastic bags to artificial hips, from fiber optical cables to automobiles. Materials science and engineering makes these materials reliable and useful through design, processing and analysis of controlled compositions, microstructures and properties.
The bachelor's degree program provides a broad materials science and engineering core with specialization in ceramics, electronic materials, metals or polymers. Biomaterials also is taught at the combined bachelor's/master's level.
The department strives to serve the scientific and engineering community of the state and nation by providing quality education in the field for undergraduate and graduate students, conducting basic and applied research to enhance science in the field, and supplying short courses, technology transfer, industrial consulting and distance learning to promote engineering in the field.
Qualified students can earn a bachelor's and a master's degree in materials science and engineering with savings of a number of credits. Students begin the MS course work in the senior year and double count a certain number of credit hours of specific graduate courses for both the BS and MS degrees. The MS degree can be completed within two to three semesters after completing the BS degree.
Seniors admitted into the program will be classified 7EG upon admission. Program admission requirements include admission to Graduate School, a junior/senior level GPA of at least 3.3, completion of a minimum of 18 credit hours in materials science and engineering courses and approvals of the committee, the college and the Graduate School.
For the student whose primary interest lies in research, a graduate program leading to advanced degrees is provided. Research areas include metals, ceramics, polymers, electronic materials, composites, magnetic materials and biomaterials.
Students interested in pursuing a career in magnetic materials should consider the undergraduate specialization in electronic materials, while those interested in a career in biomedical or biomaterials would be well served with the metals, ceramics or polymers specializations. The entire offering of courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels is designed to furnish electives for engineers in other specialties who desire a more extensive understanding of materials.
The department offers the Bachelor of Science in Materials Science and Engineering, Master of Engineering, Master of Science, the Engineer degree and Doctor of Philosophy.
In addition, the department offers a minor in MSE with 15 hours of approved coursework.
Admission to this program is selective and is based on courses completed and quality of academic record. Applicants should have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 and a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 in the critical tracking courses. Each applicant's academic record will be reviewed individually and conditional admissions are granted for special and unusual circumstances.
