Unified Early Childhood Education (Pre-K-grade 3)

Progression to Graduation
Master of Education Curriculum - 36 hrs.
Nondegree Fifth-Year Courses - 24 hrs.

This program prepares students for a master's degree or a postbaccalaureate program and recommendation for initial teacher certification. The program includes preparation to teach young children of varying capabilities through professional methods classes and clinical and classroom experiences at two levels: pre-school (to age 4) and pre-kindergarten/primary (age 3 through grade three).

The unified early childhood program also provides a pre-kindergarten handicapped endorsement. An endorsement is added to a teacher's certification to show a specific additional capability. During the three years and just prior to the completion of the program, students are expected to seek certification for First Aid and CPR.

Progression to Graduation

After completion of the first 60 hours of course requirements, students are admitted in the junior year to the professional field of study. This phase requires 60 semester hours. Students are expected to complete this phase in four semesters (averaging 15 hours per semester).

Students who fulfill the requirements for a bachelor's degree will not be recommended for certification until they have completed a fifth year of study. Students admitted to the master's degree program who successfully complete the fifth year of studies will receive a master's degree and recommendation for initial teacher certification. This recommendation applies also to students who complete a postbaccalaureate program instead of the M.Ed. program.
