THE MAJOR: A minimum GPA of 2.5 is required for continuation in this limited access major beyond semester four.

An undergraduate psychology major consists of a minimum of 36 semester hours in psychology. At least 30 of the 36 hours must be 3000 level or higher courses. At least 18 of the 36 hours must be taken at the university. To count toward the 36 hour total, all course grades must be at a C or better level.

Pre-professional courses include two basic psychology courses, STA 2023 and one of BSC 2007, 2008 or 2010.

Courses for the major must be distributed as follows:

• Introductory level: PSY 2013 or its equivalent. (A score of 3 or above in the AP psychology exam, for example.) One additional 2000-level class can be included in the 36 hour total.
• Foundation level: Students choose a minimum of two courses from each group:
• Group A: CHB 3003, EAB 3002 OR EAB 3764 (but not both), EXP 3104 OR EXP 3106 (but not both), EXP 3604, PSB 3004 OR PSB 3054 (but not both).
• Group B: CLP 3144, DEP 3053, SOP 3004, PPE 3004.
• Laboratory courses: Take at least one: CBH 4023C, DEP 4704C, EAB 4022C, EAB 4714C, EAB 4724C, EXP 4174C, EXP 4934C, PPE 4324C, PSB 4104C, SOP 4214C.
• Choose enough additional courses from the 3000, 4000 or 5000 levels in psychology to meet the 36-hour minimum.
• Statistics: Two courses in statistics are required: STA 2023 and STA 3024. Grades of C or better are required. STA 2023 is a prerequisite for all 4000-5000 level courses in psychology and should be taken before laboratory courses. STA 3024 should be taken before or concurrently with laboratory courses.
• Mathematics: Achieve proficiency up through pre-calculus: Algebra and Trigonometry (MAC 1147, grade of C or better). The combination of MAC 1114 and MAC 1140 (each with a grade of C or better) may be substituted for MAC 1147. See the Psychology Advising office to make this substitution.
• Majors should take ENC 3254, Writing in a Discipline (Psychology). This course provides important preparation for writing research reports in the required laboratory courses and can also fulfill the second composition course required by the college. The course also enhances application to graduate and professional schools (e.g., writing an effective essay on the application form) and counts toward the CLAS elective requirement.

Majors should obtain a brochure from the psychology department office, 114 Psychology Building and see a department adviser about their program of study.

HONORS: A student must attain a 3.5 overall junior/senior level average. A student who has completed a substantive and empirical research paper at the university may request consideration for high or highest honors. The paper will be evaluated by a three-person committee consisting of the student's research supervisor and two other members of the psychology department. The committee may recommend high or highest honors if the project exhibits outstanding scholarship and if the student has earned at least a 3.5 grade point average in all 3000-4000 level courses and in all psychology courses.

OVERSEAS STUDY: Consult an adviser and the UF International Center in 123 Grinter.

GENERAL EDUCATION: Most undergraduate psychology courses qualify for general education credit. Courses with a PSB prefix and EXP 3104, 3106 and 4174C count as biological sciences (B); most other psychology courses count as social and behavioral sciences (S).

COURSES: Most of the foundation and laboratory courses are offered each semester. Special topic and other advanced courses are offered less frequently. Descriptions of current courses are available in Psychology advising office, 135 PSY.

INDIVIDUAL WORK: In addition to regularly scheduled courses, the department offers four individual-work courses on a pass-fail basis: PSY 3912, PSY 4905, PSY 4949 and PSY 4970. Up to nine of these hours will count toward the 36 hours of required psychology courses for the major. In each case, a faculty member or other approved professional serves as a supervisor. Students should contact a supervisor to arrange to take these courses. Applications are available in 114 or 135 Psychology Building.
