THE MAJOR: A major in microbiology and cell science is available in the colleges of Agriculture or Liberal Arts and Sciences. The major requires:
Major requirements include BCH 4024 or CHM 4207, MCB 4203 or PCB 5235, MCB 3020, 3020L, and MCB 4303 or PCB 4522 - for a total of 15 credits of required courses and at least 10 credits of additional junior and senior level department electives totaling 25 credits.
Either MCB 4203 or PCB 5235, if not used toward the required 15 hours, may be used toward the 10 hours of electives. Three credits of electives must be satisfied by CHM 3400 or 4411. One advanced lab course is required as part of the 10 electives. MCB 4905, 4934 and 4941 cannot be used for any of the 25 credits.
A course in physical chemistry is recommended for students anticipating later work toward a graduate degree. All prospective majors should complete the biology and chemistry requirements by the end of the sophomore year. Organic chemistry (CHM 2210 or equivalent) is a prerequisite for the first course (MCB 3020) in the microbiology and cell science program.
All majors must be approved by a department adviser. For initial advising, a student should go to the department to be assigned an adviser.
HONORS: To qualify for graduation with honors, high honors or highest honors, a student must have a junior/senior level grade point average of 3.50, 3.75 and 3.85, respectively. (For purposes of honors, UF junior/senior level courses are defined as all courses taken at UF after the student has earned 60 credits, wherever taken.)
In addition, a candidate for high or highest honors must obtain grades of B or better in at least four credits of MCB 4905 and in one of the following courses: MCB 5303L, 5505, 5458 or PCB 5136L. A thesis that describes the results of the research must be written in scientific style and submitted to the faculty research supervisor and the department undergraduate coordinator during the last week of the semester.
Students who are candidates for high or highest honors must provide a copy of the thesis to the Academic Advising Center at least three days before graduation. The final decision of the honors distinction is determined by the performance in MCB 4905 and an evaluation of the thesis.
The research will be supervised by a faculty member in the department or approved faculty outside the department. The project will be microbiology or cell biology in nature. A one-page research proposal must be submitted to the undergraduate coordinator before registering for MCB 4905 and initiating the research project.
NOTE: Read the Academic Advising section of this catalog regarding the Gordon Rule communication and computation requirement. Many general education courses qualify; check the schedule of courses. Six general education credits must be international/diversity (I).
Critical tracking courses are bolded. A student should complete the bolded courses in the semester indicated with a minimum 2.5 GPA to continue on track for this major.
